Puppy just pisses everywhere.

He is 5 months old. I have a matter down for him during the night and he uses it. Pees and poops on it. But in the day he just pisses all over.

This morning I come down stairs to a matter full of poo so I go straight to it to fold it up and as I do that he squats and does a massive piss next to me.

I tale the mat in the kitchen to the bin. He's behind me and I get a new material to put down. And he's pissed in the kitchen! (This is all within a minute of me opening the door, not much else I could do!)

So I put a mat down and whilst breakfast is being made he does 2 more wees in the middle of the living room.

I don't understand why he uses the mat at night then just pissed everywhere all day?

Are you putting him outside and not letting him in till he's done something? Are you praising him and encouraging? Sounds like you aren't doing something right

Theres no difference to him between using the mat and the floor. You need to be putting him outside every 30 minutes and praising him lots when he does the right thing. Get rid of the puppy pads - he's old enough to hold it in all night, and they are confusing in the day

Take the mats away and train him to go outside. Take him out after every meal as well as regularly during the day. Give him massive amounts of praise.

I've heard mats are confusing. They say it's ok to go in the house. Also. Do you go outside with him? Praise him when he goes? Is he just faffing about out there? Try putting on lead maybe?

Take him out for a wee every half an hour. You sound like opening the door and putting him out isn't the first thing you're doing in the morning when it should be. I also agree with getting rid of the mats and training him to go outside with lots of praise.

Take his food bowl up at 6pm to stop the pooing at night.

He's under the impression that indoors is the correct place to do this. Something has gone wrong with the training. You need to take him out in the garden every 20 minutes to start with so he gets the opportunity to get it right, then you make a massive fuss of him and give a small treat (tiny bit of cheese or apple). Do this for a few days and he should get the message that the garden is the new toilet. It will require a lot of time and input from you for a week though.
And I never used the pads, to me they give the dog mixed messages.

Oh also take careful note of how long it is before he needs a poo after feeding, it's usually fairly predictable. And make sure you don't feed too late in the evening and always take him out bedroom you go to bed.

As other people have said the mat is the issue, teach him to go outside and lots of praise and tasty treats when he does, not saying you do but just in case never scold him if he does it inside as it will only make it worse.

As others have said, I would get rid of the mats.
When you came down this morning he needed to go out and you need to take him out before you do anything else ( even forget about clearing up for a minute ).
When he goes outside you get really excited and give him loads of praise. You need to be watching him all day for signs that he needs to go - sniffing, turning, scratching the ground - and swiftly take him out and wait for him to go. Apart from that you need to be taking him out every half hour or so. He will get it.

What breed is he?

Get rid of the mats. Take him out at a minimum every hour (TAKE him out, not put him out, you need to be with him). Take him out every time he wakes up. Take him out every time he's been playing. Take him out every time he's eaten.

Praise him when he goes outside and associate a command with it.

Puppies are hard work, but you need to put the effort in now.

Using the mats, as PPs have said, is teaching him to pee inside. Also, how are you cleaning up when he does have an accident? Dogs will remark the same territory if you haven't cleaned it properly. You need to use either the specialist spray or bio washing powder.

You say the first thing you do when you go down is clear up and open the door. What you need to do is straight away go outside with him and stay with him until he goes. Ditto in the evenings - are you just opening the door, or are you making sure he goes?

Take him out every 30 mins. No fuss if he has an accident but lots of praise if he goes outside. Use the same command every time you put him outside, and every time he goes - with our dog, we say 'time to go for a wee' and take her out, then when she goes we say 'good girl, be quick'. That way she knows what is expected of her.

Go out with him regularly. If he wees/poos outside praise him to high heaven. With out dog we used to go out with him and whilst he went for a wee/poo we would say the word 'toilet' over and over. After a while if we said the word toilet to him he began to cotton on. We also used to take him roughly to the same area in the garden to wee/poo. If he woofed at the door to go outside we also praised him.

After a while it all kinds of clicks.

Ah right. I was told to keep the mat over night so he had somewhere to go.

He goes outside regularly yes but still does it on the floor too.

Yes get rid of matts and go back to square one with the toilet training.

As for having a Matt overnight so he had somewhere to go my dog still cannot go all night. I read somewhere that they can hold it for 1 hour for each month of their age plus one additional hour overnight (obviously some dogs can hold it longer but mine can't). I then set an alarm so I take him out once in the night but gradually increasing the time he can hold it as he gets older.

For day time toileting you need to start again and take him out frequently, after each meal, after play etc and stay out with him until he goes with lots of praise (yes your neighbours will think u have lost it as you make a big fuss every time he weed or poos in the garden)

Go back to basics. He's confused. Get rid of mats and at that age I was going to bed late so dog could have a late wee. Getting up around 3/4am for another wee then up at 7am to go out again. By 6 months he was fine.

Out lots during the day and praise and treats when he goes. Good luck!

Sounds like lazy training.

You need to have him out every 20 minutes. Stay out there with him until he does something, and then praise praise praise! Putting him out and leaving him does nothing. 1) you don't know he's definitely done something 2) you need to praise him the second he pee's or poo's.

You need to be letting him out during the night every 2 hours or so until he learns to hold his bladder more and more. As he gets older and trained better he will hold it longer.

Honestly you get back what you give.

It's not the puppies fault. He's a dog. When he needs to pee he is going to pee whether he's outside or not, and until you're willing to put in 100% effort he's not going to get better.
