Lost our beloved girl today

We had her put to sleep this evening. We think she had a brain tumour, she had two very distressing episodes today, completely out of the blue. She already had arthritis and was quite wobbly from a couple of attacks of vestibular syndrome last summer, and this felt like one thing too many for her to deal with. I hope we did the right thing. I couldn't bear to think of her being distressed or in pain again if she had another episode, especially if we were not in the house at the time.

I loved her more than anything. We couldn't have asked for a better dog to share our lives for the last thirteen and a half years. I never thought when I woke up this morning that we would be putting our darling girl to sleep today.

Thanks honeyroar. Collecting the ashes was hard. I miss my beautiful girl so much and seeing that box really brought it home that she is gone.

Aww, OP your lovely picture made me cry 😢
I'm so sorry that you've lost your darling girl, it's unbelievable that your boy is now poorly. You must be in bits.
I'm sending you a handhold, and wishing your boy strength, for a speedy recovery.
Both dogs look so happy and loved, in your photograph.
Sleep tight beautiful girl. 🌺🌺🌺🍪

Poppypooch · 15/02/2017 20:01

Been thinking about you and wee dog all weekend, glad he is being spoiled Grin
Collecting ashes is very upsetting, I was a blubbering wreck when I collected my boys. I wanted a tree to plant in the garden, finally found one after months of searching, ddog liked pink toys the best so I wanted a tree that had pink blossom, I put his ashes in the ground when I planted the tree, it makes me smile, and I feel he is still here iyswim, when I look at the tree, just a thought if you have room to do something like that with her ashes, it's a comfort.

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 15/02/2017 20:25

You are all so lovely. It's nice to talk to people that understand what it's like to lose or be worried about a dog - I don't think my work colleagues get it at all. I've been going through lots of old photos of my girl and found some great videos of her playing in the snow, running on the beach, and retrieving out of water. She was quite quiet in her later years and I'd forgotten how vocal she was when excited. She would screech and squeal with joy when she was in the snow or in the water.

Flowers glad you can remember the good times as well amongst the sadness. Good to hear your othe dog is responding to you spoiling him and hope you get some answers soon.

Poppypooch · 15/02/2017 20:54

Spaniels were made for snow, water and of course mud. Grin hold on to those happy memories

HyacinthsBucket · 15/02/2017 21:05

I don't know how I drove home after I collected my girls ashes last January - it was unexpectedly a very beautiful wooden carved box with her name on a brass plate and I sobbed the whole way. I don't think DH knew what to do with me for about 2 weeks but it was a really deep grief for a truly wonderful companion. I'm truly blessed that she was mine for 13 wonderful years. I'm so glad your boy is getting better, you're very much allowed to spoil him rotten after such an awful time and fingers crossed for his blood tests Smile

olliegarchy99 · 16/02/2017 06:43

I still have my dog's ashes in a wooden box and she has moved with me every time - when I lose my 'lurch' I will bury them together Sad
Sorry for your loss Flowers

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 16/02/2017 07:49

DH wants to scatter the ashes on her favourite beach in Northumberland. We had some wonderful holidays there with her, so it would be nice to do that. Only I don't think I can bear to go back there now without her. We are going to a wedding near there in July so I'll see how I feel then.

OP posts:
Poppypooch · 16/02/2017 08:00

That's a good idea your dh has, but as you say wait until July to make your mind up when feelings won't be as raw, iykwim. I kept my dogs ashes about 1 year until I found the perfect tree and spot to plant it in. There is no rush Flowers

🎾 For when he's feeling better x

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 16/02/2017 10:20

ooooh, he loves tennis balls - thank you! He's been for a walk this morning and had a bit breakfast. Definitely a lot better. Now flopped out in the lounge having a rest before its time to eat again!

Fantastic, that's great news !
Thought he'd enjoy a good old tennis ball 😄
Look after yourself OP, you've been through the mill. 🍷🍰
He has such a lovely face, please give him a good old belly rub from me.

Poppypooch · 18/02/2017 21:42

How are you and ddog doing? Lovely pic btw he's a handsome boy

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 19/02/2017 12:23

He's loads better, thanks for asking! Massive appetite, going for normal walks and still sleeping on our bed . He is a bit unsettled, though - I don't know if it's from having been in the hospital for a week, or because his sister isn't here any more. He's like my shadow at the moment!

OP posts:
LaGattaNera · 19/02/2017 12:31

Oh so glad he is doing better and sorry to hear about your girl's ashes and all the distress - I do understand - I collected my boy's ashes last month and cried all day, didn't shower or even clean teeth, just ate ice cream and cried some more. Your colleagues might not get it - my OH and many of my friends don't either but we on here do get it. I have no kids, he was my kid. I am not surprised your boy doesn't know what is happening he has been through so much and doesn't understand probably. Your love with get him through.

Poppypooch · 19/02/2017 16:37

That is good news he's eating and walking, he will probably settle in a few weeks, you have all had a huge trauma. In his eyes your bed is his bed now Grin

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 19/02/2017 23:15

Yep, he definitely thinks it's his bed! There doesn't seem to be any room left for DH!

isupposeitsverynice · 20/02/2017 09:37

Aw, time to get a bigger bed! So sorry for your loss and glad your lovely boy seems to be picking up. It's amazing what a hold they have on our hearts. I still miss all my departed woofs as if they only left yesterday Flowers

Poppypooch · 05/03/2017 12:46

How are you and your wee dog doing op? Has he commandeered the full bed yet?

LordRothermereBlackshirtCunt · 06/03/2017 22:05

Hi Poppy - DDog is being treated like royalty, and has first dibs on our bed! He is back to his usual self, touch wood. The platelet count remains low, but there doesn't appear to be any clear reason for this (there are no symptoms of the obvious conditions that would cause this). So he won't have the biopsy - it's likely that the liver problem was an acute one, and has hopefully been dealt with by the antibiotics. He's just come off them, so we need to monitor him and then he'll have another blood test in a week or so to make sure the liver infection has been fully treated. So we're breathing a cautious sigh of relief. The main problem now is that, given how quickly he deteriorated when I had to rush him to the vets last month (he went for running round a field to flopped on the kitchen floor within the space of an hour), I'm terrified to ever leave him on his own again.

Oh, and thank goodness for insurance. He has racked up £9k so far Shock

Poppypooch · 06/03/2017 22:20

Aww glad he is feeling better and being spoiled rotten 🎾 for ddog Cake for you
The vets bills are frightening it's amazing how fast they mount up, I'm lucky my vet gets paid direct from insurance, less excess and a percentage, although our last dog had to go to an eye specialist who didn't deal direct with insurance so we had to pay him and claim it back. Shock
