Miniature dachshund owners-are they as fab as I think?

Have been an owner of various dogs for the last thirty years and have adored them all.
We are currently considering a mini doxie as I think they have great, sparky personalities. I have never had a small dog before-we currently have a very gentle rescue lurcher who loves small dogs
Any advice gratefully received.

We have a small standard (16 lbs). Dachsies are wonderful fun and very loyal, but they're also very stubborn and determined. They aren't easy to train, you must be very firm and very consistent as well as patient in obedience training. Ours was a rescue and was already 99% housebroken but I've been told by more than one owner that they're also notoriously difficult to housebreak so you should take that into consideration.

Ours is 'choosy' as far as other dogs (and cats) go. He seems to be fine with some, not so fine with others. There's no rhyme or reason to it.

There seems to be a wide range in temperament in Dachsies, too. Ours is 'feisty', a friend's are mellow. I've seen them timid and aggressive.

Our last dog was a Choc Lab, so like your lurcher, gentle, obedient, easy to train and very patient with other animals. Our Dachsie was a real change, to put it mildly. But we love him and he's a real pal.

They have wonderfully quirky personalities but are quite stubborn.

This is what I hear re the stubborn thing.
Lucky that we have no carpets downstairs then by the sounds of it!!

I have a beautiful 11yo long-haired mini, she is the love of my life. She is obedient and the house-training is not bad if you put in the effort. Her only negative point is barking at other dogs. Have tried everything including spending £300 on a trainer who at the end of 6 sessions said she had no more ideas! Confused
My XP had two, 1 was perfect with other dogs but not a people dog. The other was terrified of everything but very cuddly. So they are as individual as humans if you ask me.

Mine is a standard, but (of course) we say hello to dachshunds of all sizes when out and about - wide range of characters.

Do be careful if you're thinking of getting one now - apart from the obvious potential back problems (dh and I have had 3 all fine) I believe theres some other genetic test needed for minis. And because of the surge in popularity of late, there are sadly bound to be unscrupulous puppy farmers and illegal importing going on. Hopefully you're aware of this sort of thing and how to find a good breeder.

They are gorgeous. 11 yr old mini wire here. Very intelligent, playful little dogs that can walk for miles!

I grew up with 2. They do bark a lot. They used to bark at huge dogs, then run. Horses too Blush. Bloody nightmare.

Excellent guard dogs though. Loved cats. They barked at those too, and when they got it cornered, wagged their tails wildly at it but our own cats were not intimidated.

One had back problems. You need to keep them fit and healthy and watch that they stay slim.

They like a good walk. (But don't fetch sticks and walk round puddles.)

Ours is gorgeous, loving, fun and a joy to be around most of the time.

He is also very stubborn and we have completely babied him and made a rod for our own backs. He barks at passers by a lot too but any other daxie owner will laugh and say they all do it.

If theyre well socialised will be fine with other dogs / kids / babies.

Dont underestimate the amount pf attention they garner tho. You cant leave the house without people trying to stop and pet them. You need quite a thick skin i think. Dp is better at dealing with that than me.

Completely in love with him bt wish we had been firmer with him in the beginning.

They do need treating like proper full sized dogs.

We used to have problems with the petting. One hated it and was unreliable, so we had to divert people away from him and the other had to put up with it and looked miserable. Much rather be running around and sniffing down holes.

We have 2 minis. One is stand-offish and doesn't like other people. Grumpy old sod. The other is happy, cheerful and loves everyone, human or dog. Both love a lap. Both love walks and can keep going for hours. 1 has never been 100% housetrained. Other is fine.
Research your breeder. Need to be PRA clear. And get decent insurance as prone to very expensive back problems.
