Veyron comes home - needs a new name

So, here he is all crashed out after his evening stroll.

We had one big shit indoors - thankfully on a hard floor! - but wees all outside. Pre-poo he was doing some weird panting whilst just mooching around the house - is that a sign?

We fed him the food from the home and added quite a fair bit of warm water like they suggested but he was gagging on it. I wonder if by the time he got his food at the home the biscuits were all soggy. The poo was all soft and stinky Shock so he's starting a raw diet tomorrow. Should I just change him over or do it gradually?

But all in all it's been a successful start. He's been very well behaved even staying quickly behind him baby-gate whilst I fried bacon and we all sat down to eat.

The only problem now, is the name!

He was called Vayron which we planned to change to the correct spelling of Veyron. (Italian racing driver and a Bugatti car.) But he doesn't respond to it and was only given to him a year ago by his previous owners anyway. His training name was Gary Merc something.

We had decided on Toby but we're looking at him and thinking it's a bit lame.

Any ideas?

We could just with Veyron

DS thought Hiro because he's big and black like Hiro the train from Thomas & Friends and because he's a hero because he donates blood. Isn't that sweet?! But I thought it was too 'soft' and a name ought to have harsher sounds just for ease of recognition.

Congrats on your new boy.

So jealous. We've had 2 girls and 3 foster greyhound boys.

The pacing around was a sign - he was looking for a way out and the panting was nerves because he needed the loo.

Why did they soften his food? Are his teeth ok? One of ours would rush his food so had to have a large stone to eat around.

Martingale collars are great. Just make sure all the welds are strong.

We took ours to dog training as a good way to bond and get used to other breeds. They would sit, down, wait etc so you can train them.

We had some great fleeces from equafleece. Great for keeping them warm this time of year. Had light weight ones for nights in the house.

Yes, the weird panting and mooching was a bit of stress build up beforehand most likely. Give him the opportunity to go out whenever he does it and he'll soon get the idea.
I'd be inclined to transition gradually to raw, but there's more expert advice out there on it that might be more detailed.
Take a little time with a new name maybe, and get to know him? He'll still know when you're talking to him. I'd end up calling him Ron but that's just me
Love black boy greys - lost ours in the summer, still have our gorgeous black girl grey though.
Enjoy the way he'll steal into your heart!!

X-post, Hiro is a lovely name for a greyhound boy I think. They are heroic dogs.

P.p.s. all our greys were tuxedos black with white chest & feet. Definitely a special place in our hearts.

Having treats in the park with another dog walker. Just showing that time and training some greys can go off lead and socialise.

You shouldn't change the food over immediately - it needs to be a gradual process.

Panting can often be a sign of stress, so I would watch for triggers there.

Awww nowhere love those pix..your two look very like ours. Hadn't thought of 'tuxedo' before, love that. Though I have always said they have smart white shirts and white trainers...

I feel really bad now for not noticing he wanted to go outside. Sad I thought he was just checking the place out.

He's just done another one tonight (outside) and all tucked up in bed.

DS is now coughing his guts up upstairs - I hope it's not an allergy!!!

tuxedo love it!!! Perhaps we should call him 'James'.

Don't feel bad! But it's a good idea in the first few days to put him outside every half hour or so at first.

He had only been in half an hour! So hopefully bad timing. Will try better tomorrow.

DH on nightime duty as I did "such a good job with the DCs" (when they were babies, crying all night). I knew it would all be worth it one day!

Don't be surprised if you find him on your sofa in the morning. They like to be comfy.

He's closed in the utility room. On a very comfy bed with his soft toys. The worst that could happen I think is him scratching the door or opening the welly cupboard and chewing them to bits.

He hasn't slept all afternoon so hopefully exhausted.

I actually think Veyron works well as a name, and it's appropriate for him, as he's sleek, fast and a racer.

Shortening it to Ronnie would also work.

He won't know his name yet so you need to work on teaching it to him. Whenever he responds to it, even round the house, treat lavishly and immediately (trust me, he'll pick up on it very fast indeed). I'd keep a treat pouch of chopped up sausages or tiny cubes of cheese about your person - basically you are wanting him to see you as a Glorious Fountain of Wondrous Bounty. Think of every treat as an investment - every reward is going to be valuable one day when you need him to come back to you when there are other exciting things around.

Poo-wise, it's very normal indeed for poos to be a bit squidgy for the first few days in a new home, even if you stick to a known diet, as soft/loose poo is often related to the stress of moving. I wouldn't look at doing anything to the diet for five to seven days, so he can concentrate on settling in, starting to relax and learning the house routine.

That's also worth mentioning - greys do like their routine, especially for feeding. You will find they have highly accurate internal clocks and will not hesitate to remind you when it's time to eat. Our gang will line up by my desk just before 6 and I'm faced with three pointy noses giving me the Jedi treatment - You will go and feed the starving greyhounds..... Grin

Yay!! Isn't he lovely? Don't feel bad about the indoor poo, same happened to us on the first day - it's all a big learning curve.

Food changes should always be done very gradually. We've had ours for 2 months and are still mixing a teeny bit of the crappy kennel food in. I know how it feels to want to upgrade everything straight away but you do have to take it slowly.

How was he in the night?

He was as good as gold. There was a little bit of sleep-talking about 12pm but he was fine when DH went down to check on him.

I didn't sleep very well because every time I stirred I kept thinking it was time to take him out for a wee! DH went down at 7:30 and he did his full business outside. Unfortunately he seems to like where the trampoline is so we'll have to work on that.

Now he's patiently watching the kids eat while he waits for his own breakfast.

We're going to try referring to him as Hiro this morning. It's Japanese for abundant and tolerant! I suspect Veyron will stick though.

I like Hiro. Have you seen Disney's Big Hero 6? It's the name of the lead character.

I love Veyron as a name, and it shortens nicely. Hiro is good, but I'm not sure I can imagine shouting it.

Nice collar choice, we have one quite like it in teal tones, and a fleece lead in teal and royal blue to match

Sounds great for the first night. I tried shutting mine out of my bedroom the first night. Big mistake. I was treated to a large male greyhound throwing himself against the bedroom door and howling. He ended up sleeping on a dog bed on my bedroom floor (and on my bed when he could sneak on) for the rest of his time being fostered by me Grin

So I'm a bit concerned about Hiro and the DCs. I know it's only a day in so hopefully I'm panicking over nothing.

The DCs are well behaved and respectful around him. They wait until Hiro comes to them before offering gentle strokes, they don't go near him when he's eating or on his bed. But when he's been allowed to walk around the house (which hasn't been much because of this behaviour) and the DCs are around he has displayed the following behaviour -

  • skittish almost frantic searching and panting. (after eliminating and moments previously been happily on his bed)
  • a 'play bow', but it's with his tail wrapping right in between his legs and face looking up, not down.

I took him for a long walk today and he was mostly fine (although some pulling) but when we got to the park he suddenly behaved the in the same way (albeit a more extreme version) and very nearly pulled me over. He was skitting around, manic changes of direction and pulling me around and then out of the park.

We passed a few dogs on our walk and he was fine. But the park literally sent him crazy.

Is he scared of the DCs? Children in general? Confused
