Which breed would you recommend for us?

We are considering getting a dog (subject to approval of landlord). Both DP & I grew up around dogs and our parents still have dogs so we understand the commitment involved.

Obviously I've been spending some time researching breeds but would be interested for other opinions on what you would recommend:

  • We have a large house and decent sized garden
  • No children but hope to have some in a couple of years
  • We've got four cats so need a breed without a strong prey drive
  • I work full time but DP is at home most of the time but the dog might have to be at home for 2-4 hours sometimes
  • DP grew up with Labs and Collies
  • I grew up with Staffies (love their personality but don't like their look so much)

DP doesn't like toy size dogs. I don't like muscly dogs (e.g Staffies, Boxers) or thin dogs (e.g. Greyhounds), just personal preference.

The obvious choice is a Lab but wondering if there is a breed I haven't thought of without the obvious doggy smell and shedding that Labs have.

(Would obviously happily deal with shedding and smell or wouldn't be getting a dog, it's just a practical consideration when thinking of Labs).

Thanks everyone...our landlord came back today and agreed to let us have a dog (with extra 1/2 month deposit and pet clauses which is fine).

The only thing is they have said they would prefer us to have a small dog rather than a medium/large dog Confused

I have no issues with a small dog but DP refuses as he says they aren't 'real dogs' Hmm

So I'm seeing if they will be okay with a Cocker spaniel as it's smaller than other breeds we've mentioned (lab, etc) but would still just about be okay with DP.

EXCITED Grin

We have just got an Irish Terrier, he is 10 weeks old and lovely ;-) My husband was the same re small dogs and the Irish Terrier is a 'proper' sized dog (apparently) - No cats though so no idea how that would go together as I guess terriers are prey driven! Good luck with your search I will bookmark and see what you get

Setter lover. How are they at being left? I would love an Irish setter but have 2 kids (5 and 8) and would need to be out at work 3 days a week ( would get a dog walker)
