Beagles scaring other dogs

We have two gorgeous beagles, Lily and Louis. They aren't really like the typical beagles, maybe because there's two of them? We've had them since puppies. They're not overly hyperactive but we take them on long walks every day. They go with me pretty much everywhere. My next door neighbours (new) are complaining that our dogs are scaring their pug. The pug is fairly skittish and I do my best to keep Lily and Louis away from him (eg. if we're getting in from a walk or shopping and neighbours are too, I call them to heel and we go inside quickly) but it's hard and I wonder whether you have any tips on keeping dogs from scaring others. I'm quite upset because it's the first complaint I've ever had and I don't know how the dogs are scaring their pug. All I know is that we had a rude letter shoved through the door saying that the beagles were scaring their pug and to keep the dogs away from their pug and their new puppy. I think the new puppy's a husky cross as I caught sight of it two days ago and it has the features. We have a huge back garden for Lily and Louis and they do get the run of the place pretty much. What can I do for two fairly mild beagles who are scaring smaller dogs? Any tips on preventing upset?

How are they scaring them?

Are they jumping up and down at the boundary snarling and barking? If not I would ignore.

No, they do bark but don't jump at the fence at all.

Are they actually interacting with the other dogs in any way? Is the request actually reasonable?

To be honest I wouldn't like a dog next door barking. If it's the odd woof fair enough but more than that not on.

I have dogs and if they start barking outside they're rounded up and brought in. I do reckon they've learnt now not to bark because they know if they start I come thundering out and frogmarch them in the house.

They tend to woof at interesting things but it is definitely not consistent barking because I'm at home all day so would be getting them out of the house if they were constantly barking as it would do my head in.

Without you get more information from the neighbours about exactly what part of their behaviour scares your dog you have little chance of combating it.
However the more you have posted about the dogs not constantly barking and only giving the odd alerting "Hey!" bark then it could be a case of pfd (precious first dog) from the owners and they may be unconsciously raising a dog that's going to be petrified of new dogs due to their inability to look within their dog to see why they are reacting with fear.

So they want your dogs to stop being dogs?? Mm. Smile and ignore. . They don't know what life is gonna be like soon if they have a husky...
They will be wishing they too had a beagle.

You need to talk to them and find out what's bothering the neighbour's dogs. It might be that they're frightened when yours bark. If they are, you and your neighbour introducing the dogs one to one when out on a walk would help. Beagles, like dachshunds, are a bit shouty. Once they get used to the noise the dogs should be fine.

I know cain! Dh bumped into neighbour man in the shops and mentioned seeing the new pup, apparently it's a Pomsky. Dh suggested that they get the dogs out on a walk with Lily & Louis. Dh said he looked a bit cautious but has agreed. So, hopefully the dogs can get used to our two and be playmates (in an ideal world)
