We're thinking about getting a dog and are wondering about beagles, do they make good family dogs? I've heard they are quite difficult to train... Would love to hear from people who have some experience of these dogs.

The breed you should get really depend on your lifestyle, where you live and how much time you have for walking. Beagles have a lot of energy and need a lot of amusement. I wouldn't keep one in the town.

They can be mischievous as pups but as working dogs they generally want to please. However, be prepared to bath them often as they really do smell! As long as you're experienced with dogs or are going to go to classes the training won't be a problem but you must put the work in from day 1.

Beagles are lovely (friendly, lively, bright) but are notorious for a) poor recall and b) getting fat.

Their bark also takes some beating.

If you know any local owners, it might be a good idea to ask them if they know any beagle owners you could chat to.
