Sick puppy

Just wondering if anyone can advise. My 10 month puppy was sick twice on Saturday morning. We starved him until Sunday when we gave him a few small 'bland' meals. He hasn't been sick again but he has been so lethargic, not asking for his walks, just mostly asleep. His poos have been very soft and there was even a smear of blood in one two days ago. He was also off his food for a few days although that seems a little better now.
I took him to the vet yesterday and he said he had a bit of a temperature and gave me some probiotics. He's had two doses now and there's no improvement. I'm wondering how long it should take before he improves and if probiotics are generally successful in this kind of case. I hate seeing him like this.

In our case the probiotics took a couple of days to work. I'd keep offering food- rice and boiled chicken is perfect. Also encourage him to drink. If there's no improvement in 2 days take him back to the vet. Hope he perks up!

Thanks. I hope he does too. The vet recommended chicken and rice so we started him on it last night and he has just had the most explosive diarrhea. I don't know if it's the probiotics or the change in diet. He's never been very good with high protein food like chicken and fish. Ah well.

We got prescription food from the vets as well but I'm not sure if it's just a bit of an expensive con! The probiotics are pretty rank but did work eventually. Good luck. It's awful when they're ill!

My last dog had to have the expensive prescription dog food too for a while.
It is awful when they're ill. You Google the symptoms and read all sorts of dire things that convince you that death is imminent even when it's just an upset tummy.

Yep. Because we've got a deep chested dog (lurcher) we always think he has a twisted stomach. He's usually just eaten something grim in the woods! You're pup will be fine.Smile
