Dog DNA test - the results are in!

It's like Jeremy Kyle!!

I have the mad glaswegian mongrel named Daisy. She was found on streets of Glasgow aged about two and went to rescue.

My friends parents took her in, and she had a great life!

Sadly they died in quick succession, and as she was nearly 10, they were struggling to rehome her. So she came to us. She's now 11 and so lovely! But such a complete mix.

Ive always been curious as to what she might be. She has a barrel chest and strong shoulders, with telescopic legs and brown and tan colouring. And a curly wurly tail.

I sent off a DNA swab out of curiousity - I know that they can be deemed hit and miss but I was interested...

It came back today and she is a substantial part staffy/whippet cross, with alsation/collie and a bit of German Spitz. The German Spitz certainly explains the curly wurly tail!

It makes sense now - barrel chest and strong shoulders and the telescopic legs with nipped in waist - and the colouring.

She is very pleased with the results and has just had a treat from her advent calendar! Grin

Has anyone else ever had a DNA test done?

No but I'm interested to read your post as I'm thinking of getting test kits for 2 of our dogs. Both are Labrador cross rescues. One is crossed with a German shepherd and the other allegedly a collie (but as the vet said, there could be anything in there!)

I was actually thinking of getting 2 kits for DH for xmas as he's always analysing their characters and behaviour. Did your test say what proportion of each breed your dog is (who looks gorgeous by the way!)

Veterinari · 02/12/2016 22:42

Ooh! What kit did you use and how much was it please?

ClarissaDarling · 02/12/2016 22:45

Interested! We have a god knows what from dogs trust, was test expensive?

CMOTDibbler · 02/12/2016 22:46

Id like to get ddog2 dna tested- we think he's whippet x Doberman but his mum (he was born in rescue) is Black and Tan so not pure whippet.

Your dog is gorgeous!

Haffdonga · 02/12/2016 22:49

She's lovely. I was trying to guess what she was before reading the rest of your post and got the staffy/GSD but not the Spitz.

She looks a bit like she's got one dog's head, a different dog's body and another dog's tail and legs. Wink

I did! I used wisdom panel, cant remember how much it cost though. For my old dog sadly not with us anymore, he was a proper Heinz 57. Mix of a jack russell, cavalier King Charles and Labrador mainly, with some distant husky, and puli, the dreadlock dogs. He had a crazy thick coat that grew and grew and was like cotton wool. They broke it all down in the results by parents, grand parents, etc and then distant percentages. It's great if you have a rescue. Yours looks lovely!

I did one for DDog2 as a bit of fun (got it cheap in a Black Friday sale last year) and although some of the breeds it came up with were believable some were utterly ridiculous.

They're notoriously inaccurate and some companies will run the test again and manage to get a different set of results if you complain so they're really not worth putting much stock in, at least as they are currently.

RoseDog · 02/12/2016 22:55

We got our rescue DNA tested not long after we got her 4 years ago, some breeds in there that we didn't expect! We got out kit from Amazon, it was about £60 I think.

We had our lurcher done recently and it was fascinating. She's half greyhound, with the rest being a whippet/Patterdale cross plus there is a distant dash of Staffie and Dutch Shepherd Shock

Curiously, there's no hobbit (loves her second breakfast) or mermaid (adores water).

I've attached a couple of pics of her.

The kit we got was £35, and it was very straightforward to order. The DNA swabs came quickly and we had the results back within five days of sending them back.

The results go back as far as great grandparents stone circle and one of the great grandparents was a staffy crossed with something that they had to take an educated guess at (which was the German Spitz) as the DNA testing only goes back 3 generations.

The test was wisdompanel uk and was about £60. You can upload a photo of the dog when the results are in and they put it on your certificate.

Where Daisy used to live, an elderly lady lived next door and she used to walk Daisy sometimes - when she came to live with us I kept in touch with the lady updating her on Daisy as she did miss her,but wasn't in a position to take her on when her owners died. I'm going to send her a copy of her certificate! She will love it! Grin

We had our Dogs Trust rescue crossbreed DNA tested soon after he came to us nearly seven years ago.
We bought the kit from our vet, and it was £60 at the time.
He is part Collie, part Springer Spaniel, with a bit of Bull Terrier.
DSis asked me if we were going on Jeremy Kyle.

RoseDog · 03/12/2016 21:24

My dog was very overbred we await the call from JK for DNA testing from many staffie-type dogs over the years looking for their biological mum!

Knackered46 · 03/12/2016 22:00

Rosedog oh Bless! Have you a pic?

Going back to Daisys great grandparents, 3 were staffys, 2 were whippets, 1 was alsation, 1 was border collie, and the final one was mixed breed with a dollop of German Spitz and white alsation, but they only go back 3 generations so it was an educated guess.

Am laughing at Haffdonga you are dead on the money about her being a composite dog with different bits stuck on! Xmas Grin

He is gorgeous Stars ! You can see the staffy certainly, but also some lab - it's amazing what comes out in terms of appearance and personality.

I'd love to get my Ddog2 tested. He's a rescue from Spain and his passport says Podenco x so who know what else he has in him.

Knackered46 · 03/12/2016 23:35

Omg! He has a similar tail to Daisy! Curly wurly, black on top and brown underneath!

Daisy has a brown face with black eyebrows though - but there are definitely some similarities - and she has white feet too!

I have one I would love to find get tested. She was an orphaned puppy stray, looks like a cross between German shepherd and a fox, about 1/3 size of a German shepherd.

StarsandSparkles · 04/12/2016 08:48

rosedog my picture i posted up thread is of my lab x staffy and your dog to me looks like a full staffy more than anything else. I couldnt see lab in her. She is a gorgeous dog though :)

RoseDog · 04/12/2016 09:34

Stars she is too big to be a full staff, her DNA has her half staff, quarter American Staff and quarter everything else!
