Getting ready to adopt 8 month old rescue puppy

I'm adopting an 8 month old rescue puppy, mixed breed, but probably some Labrador in his parentage somewhere.

It is years since I had a puppy, my last dog was three years old when we adopted her.

I'm looking for advice on suitable toys, and general advice on helping him to settle. Will he be the equivalent of a stroppy teenager? Will he still want to chew everything? Rescue have told me to feed him on Chappie, as it is low protein and he hasn't been fed very good food before, so need to slowly introduce other food. Was thinking of feeding Royal Canin or Science Plan puppy.

I have no idea about crates or crate training, Moogie just slept happily in her bed. Should I get a crate? Are they essential?

Can anyone recommend a good modern dog care/training book please.

I will be enrolling in puppy training classes in the New Year. Thank you!

Royal Canin and Hills Science Plan are both very expensive foods that get very poor analytical reviews, so wouldn't recommend those - have a look at allaboutdogfood.com for details.

I find Arden Grange, James Wellbeloved, Simpsons all good mid-priced foods, and all have sensitive options if his stomach does play up as you change off the Chappie (which should be done gradually).
