Greyhound chewing through leads! Any recommendations?

We recently rehomed an ex-racer. She has been with is for nearly 2 months and so far, so good apart from the nighttime howling

A couple of weeks ago I briefly left her outside a shop (I know, I know ). Her lead snapped, or at least we assumed it snapped, and luckily a quick thinking passer-by grabbed her.

Since then she has nibbled through my parents' DDog's lead (twice!) and she has started nibbling her own new lead (a beautiful red velvet one from KitschCollars, aargh!).

Clearly I need to find an alternative, indestructible lead. Are there any alternatives to a chain? Any recommendations wise MNetters?

I'm shocked that DDog can actually get through the leads. Our last grey couldn't even chew rawhide!

I'd strongly recommend the Lupine leads. Our lurcher has one.

They come with a "Even If Chewed Guarantee" , which sounds as though it could be useful! link

One of our greyhounds, when excited (e.g. when she sees a squirrel) will whip round and start chewing at her lead. Hers is from Meggie Moo - velvet outer and tough webbing inner and so far is proving indestructible.

I have a metal chain link one which is fairly indestructible! Thought it was slight overkill but maybe not!

The Lupine chew guarantee looks perfect, but the leads are 2ft, 4ft or 6ft (!). Does anyone know whether that includes the handle? Presumably it does?

DDog's current leads are 41" and 36" (incl. handle) so bang in the middle of those measurements. I'm thinking 4ft is too long and 2ft is too short. Or maybe I'm overthinking it

How is she able to chew through leads? As you say, you shouldn't be leaving her tied up anyway - it's a dangerous business for all manner of reasons, and hopefully having had her get loose once you won't repeat that.

Surely if she's chewing them while you're on the other end, you just tell her to stop?

Surely you just keep her lead and your parents' dog's lead out of the way?

I don't think the DPs and DH were just standing there watching her chew through the leads TBH , I think they were chatting and didn't notice.

Obviously telling her to stop is something that has occurred to us, but being humans we are not infallible so I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I have 6ft leads for all our dogs, including little lurcher's Lupine one. Yes it includes the handle. I have handle looped over right wrist and dog walking gently to heel on my left - plenty of room for sniffs and stretches if need be but all ours do lots of practice in loose lead walking and lurcher does Rally with me (with that lead) so walks very close by me.

Brilliant, thanks Scuttle. I think I'll go for the 4ft though, as DDog is often on the school run, and I also have several children/bags etc so a shorter lead feels like it would give me more control

My lurcher ddog1 will chew through a lead if you aren't watching and he feels a bit stressed - you could never tie him up anywhere as he has ishoos about this. A pretty cord one took less than 10s to bite through!
We have the Meggie Moo fleece/webbing ones which have lasted very well, and have just acquired a Dogs on Bikes one which I like (and has loops built in so you can shorten it).
