I'm middle aged and have work shifts including nights all my working life. I'm also a dog owner, I have two happy well adjustedwell behaved dogs one is 13 one is 4 they are not a breed that requires lots of walking although they are walked a lot 5 miles a day. Working shifts mean that they are only left alone all day max once a week, On this day I have a dog walker/helpful neighbour who walks them/let's them out to do a pee etc.
But shifts are starting to catch up on me physically I'm physically worn out and Ive just been offered a research post starting September 2017, I've been offered similiar things before but I like shifts (and nothing has ever been that tempting) because I like being at home in the weekday/day time but now I've been offered my dream job and its time for a change, 9-5 Mon to Frid looks very very attractive.
But I worry about my dogs, they are used to having me around. Secondly my older dog is starting to look very old, he' definitely slowing down he sleeps all the time now and my younger dog will not live alone, he has always lived with another dog and frets terribly when he not there. My original plan had been to get a puppy late next summer after my holiday, my breed of choice is rare so I can't wait till the old dog dies as you often have to wait quite a while. Once the puppy was here I was going to work nights for 4-5 months to house train if etc.
So now I don't know what to do. I want this job very much but I don't want to upset my lovely dogs. I can get the dog walker/neighbour to help but it's not the same as me being here. Secondly I will obviously need to find another companion for my younger dog when the older one dies but should I do this before I change jobs to settle it into a routine? The older dog is very tolerant of other dogs so getting another one will not upset him as he's very chilled and very well socialised.
