Vet wants to start vaccination course again :(

Says he hasn't got the correct brand. I'm SO stressed out. Had my boy for two weeks now and he's due on Monday then able to go out a few weeks after that. If we start the course again we are looking at another 5/6 weeks! On top of the two we already have endured. He's very active and he needs to get out and about, not to mention all the socialising he is missing out on. I carry him out every day but it's not the same. Is this usual? Any ideas on what I can do please?

What vaccine /brand did he have for the first one and how old was he?

Can you go somewhere else? Is it a supply issue for this brand?

Canixin and he had it at 10 weeks. Vet said he'd never hear of that brand, which I find hard to believe.

If you need to restart the course, it would normally be 2 doses done a minimum of two weeks apart, with immunity a week after the second vaccine so a total of 3 weeks from the first jab before he can socialise.
I've not heard of Canixin either but Google tells me that the brand is Virbac who are a big veterinary medicine producer.
Could the pup go to the vet who did his first vaccine for the second part?

There is also a possibility that the Nobivac vaccine may be compatible but you NEED to check with Virbac or MSD who make Nobivac.

Have you tried ringing round other vets in your area to see if they stock the brand you need?

This exact situation is why breeders generally don't give pups the first part of their vaccinations unless they're keeping them long enough to complete it themselves. I'm surprised your vet didn't bring it up sooner, did they not ask about what vaccinations he'd had when you took him for his first check up?

I have been three or four times a day.

Also have booked into a puppy socialisation group but that doesn't start till 2nd November.

Canigen and Canixen are listed as different vaccines on Virbac website - I'd definitely speak to the manufacturer.

Yes, just been looking at that too, thanks so much. Oh this really sucks. At least will only be three weeks though but then there's over vaccinating....I must say I don't think my vet has been particularly on the ball with this. I might change to another one to be honest.

If the vet only saw the puppy's vaccine card at the check up appointment, he won't have had time to check compatibility beforehand. He's probably right to be cautious and warn you of the possibility of restarting the course. Hopefully he'll check it out before Monday. Good luck.

Its not your vets fault ,most practices only do a particular vaccine , we had this issue when we got our pup ,but our vet rang round and found another local vet that did the vaccine we needed so we took pup there to finish the course and then reverted back to the usual vet . Just have a phone round you will probably find someone who has it .

A lot of breeders don't do the first vaccinations for precisely this reason.

I had this issue & luckily found another vet close by that did the original vaccine. It is stressful though when you're eager to get them out & socialised.

Went to vet this morning, he had a vaccination in that was compatible, thankfully so my boy is vaccinated and can go out in one week. I can't tell you how much better it feels to know there's only a week to go. He is a dog that needs to be getting out and about and it's been hard these past few weeks. Thanks for all your advice

I've had the same issue. Hes now 11 weeks and getting far too bouncy and he's big and heavy to carry around. So dc and I are confined to the house until after half term. Hes able to go for short Street walks for two weeks after that then another vaccine. Once he completed all three vaccines he's allowed in woods etc where wildlife are present. He'll be 16 weeks then.

Ring round all vets in and out of area rather than over-vaccinate. Dpup willalso still have conferred immunity from dam .
Better to travel to new temp vet.

Caveat: for good conferred immunitydam would have to have healthy strong immune system of her own not from vaccines as research suggests vaccines dont confer from dam to offspring like natural immunity does
