Dog has been sick

Hello - so our little adopted dog was sick in the night. We're still figuring out her food, as she was fed loads of "human food" in her previous home, so dog food has not been popular.

We found a brand she liked and we were really pleased when she ate quite a lot of it last night.

However in the night she was sick so I'm guessing this was too much too soon of this food and feel really bad.

She's been to the loo, has been reasonably bright, but not as energetic this morning. She's snoozing now, which I'm guessing is good to help her feel better.

What should I offer her to eat today do you think while her tummy settles?

We give our boy chicken (cooked breast pieces) and rice (cooked) after a sickness episode and he bloody loves it, he's very disappointed when he's returned to his dry food.

You need to slowly wean her on to the food. So give her chicken and rice for a couple of days until her stomach has settled then slowly add in more and more of the food over about a week. Also make sure your not over feeding her as that can give them loose stools or make them sick.

If my dog is sick, I do chicken and rice by simmering bits of chicken with rice and an excess of water for about 20 mins. This means the rice is very wet and theres some chickeny broth, which helps with hydration. Or similar with a bit of (boneless!) fish.

Make up some of this and then phase in the other food.

Thank you all so much - chicken and rice it is - I will pop out shortly and get some for her.

I feel really bad that we gave her too much of the new food. We stupidly thought that as she wasn't used to one particular food, she would be ok, but we were obviously wrong.

Don't beat yourself up - I'm sure your dog was delighted when she ate it and probably doesn't really feel much the worse for it.

Thanks Errol - she was loving it and we were happy because we'd found a dog food she seemed keen on. A little too keen it seems poor love.

Should I take her out for her normal lunch time walk do you think?

Just carry on as normal but feed chicken and rice - honestly dogs are sick fairly often. They eat things in the park that don't agree with them, or lick the wrong disgusting thing off the pavement - if they are still bright and happy and not being sick lots it's really nothing to worry about! As PPs have said - chicken and rice for a few days whilst their funny settles, then reintroduce the normal food by mixing it in with the chicken and rice a little bit at a time so they get used to it.

Yes, take her for her walk. Unless she shows any sign of actually being ill, it's really not something to worry about too much.

The most spectacular sick after overeating my current dog did was when I gave him too many leftovers from a roast dinner. A few bits of meat, and quite a lot of brocolli with gravy. Sicked it up that evening while he was lying on DDs bed as he used to do at that point while she went to sleep. In her hair and everything. Now thats bad! Grin

Errol - thank you, we've been for our walk. She was keen to go and while not as energetic as normal, she was certainly having fun. She went to the loo too which is maybe a good thing. She's snoozing again now, but had a drink when she came in. That sounds like a spectacular sick - ewww - what a shame!!! Off to get the chicken and rice now!

Just to add - we have a rescue dog who, like yours, had been fed an improper diet of human food. She is also a cross-breed, one half of which is notorious for being a breed that is picky about food. It took us months to get her to eat any kind of dog food, and she had bouts of horrific gastritis the entire first year we had her. Hang on in there! It does get better! MaxwellDog will now tuck in willingly to her dog food.... although admittedly only if it has a sprinkling of fresh Parmesan on top.... Hmm

Fenella - I'm glad MaxwellDog likes her dog food now!! Good taste with the parmesan, that is just so funny!!

I've got the rice cooking now so hopefully she will enjoy it. She's certainly hungry now, whereas she wasn't earlier so that's a good sign!

Not the dried Parmesan, mind - she won't touch it unless it's freshly grated.... My dog is a monster! Grin Hope the pup feels 100% better soon!

Fenella - freshly grated parmesan!! That's hilarious. What a lucky dog.

So the chicken and rice did the trick - she loved it in fact! I've now just been doing rice, with only a tiny bit of chicken and then I've mixed in her new dry dog food. I'm slowly decreasing the rice and increasing the dry food. Hopefully that sounds right!

I have to admit to quite liking "cooking" for her - how sad am I!!!
