We have finally reached a point in our lives where we feel ready for a dog - kids are old enough, we have a garden and a bit more time. Dh has had big dogs growing up but as we live in a city we will likely look at smaller dogs. We haven't decided on that yet as I am forward planning! All we know is that it would have to be reasonably small and not require loads of exercise.

We would like a puppy and I have heard they are extremely hard work!! Before committing to a dog I want to make sure I know what I'm doing and that we are 100% committed. Are there any books or websites you could recommend that could give advice? I'm thinking along the lines of the things I read pre baby tbh.

Yes - once we have decided to go ahead and what characteristics would suit our family I will have a good look. This is not something I am taking lightly!!

We have already ruled out a few eg dachshund, as we have a house with a lot of stairs!

Mine was 3 when we got her. They're usually around 3-5. They can be left on their own but as with any dog, you need to build it up gradually. I don't leave mine for more than 2.5 - 3 hours, because I know she's fine with that. It really depends on the particular dog, though.

When I got mine I was looking for a smaller greyhound, and ended up with quite a big one, but the rescue centre matched us perfectly - her temperament suits us down to the ground which is far more important than her being a few inches taller than I'd been looking for.

This is a great little breed book to peruse of an evening. Photos are from my copy to give you an idea. Symbols with a key for some characteristics, breed history and a bit of blurb.
