Female dog humping

We have a 5 year old rescue girl who we took in earlier this year. Recently she's started displaying really unwanted behaviours like humping and she will literally try to hump anything she can get hold of.

Is this normal behaviour? It's my first dog and I don't know what is and isn't normal

It's normal. It's just an instinct.

One of my female dogs is a terrible humper. She's spayed but that doesn't seem to make a difference. She likes one of our other dogs in particular, possibly because other dog just stands there and looks at me woefully. I tell humpy dog off and then she stops. She tried it with our male dog but got extremely short shrift!

Just interrupt the behaviour if you don't like it. It may calm down once your rescue settles into her place in the house. Rescue dogs are often angelic for a few months and then you start to see the less desirable parts of their personality! But they often settle - in time.
