Having sadly lost our ddog recently we are keen to get another dog soon as we really miss him. After spending time with friends recently who have a springer dh thinks that a springer would be good for our family. Smaller than previous ddog but still good with kids, sociable, ok with other pets should we choose to add to the family later on. He's also thinking that agility classes are something we could do?
Do springers make good pets even if they're not a 'working dog' ?
Also, pics please! They are gorgeous dogs

I agree, I prefer welsh springers to English springers

We had a springer, most beautiful dog you've ever seen fabulous gun dog for DH did exactly as he was told , perfect. But then when DH went out the dog refused to believe me or kids should be there. Bastard thing would just go for us, you only had to walk past him and he'd growl . He'd lie on the stairs and we couldn't get past him as we were scared in the end he had to go when he bit DS on the arm

Mine even loves my stinky trainers !!! He's always near me - even follows me to the bathroom !! Needs a good hour a day walking or running with me - he could walk all day ! Thankfully we live in the middle of farmland so he has plenty of fields and streams to explore !

We have two springers. They are just the best dogs ever, the perfect family dog as long as you can commit to the exercise they need. I have one snuggled up next to me on the sofa right now Smile

cloughie100 · 17/09/2016 23:56

We have a Springer, lots of fun and a joy to take for a walk but needs to be kept occupied, obsessed with balls - as shown on photo...

I love all spaniels. We have a had a springer and now have our second cocker.

Fantastic dogs, all of them.

I am actually finding our working cocker needs more exercise than the others did. But she be doing agility when she is older.

They do need exercise and mental stimulation. So easy to train, great with the kids, great with other dogs.

I would always recommend springers/cockers to anyone who who has the time to exercise them.

Vajazzler · 18/09/2016 07:40

I can't get springers off the brain now! We are defo getting one.
Can't agree on names though!

Please show us your springer puppy when you get one 😍😍😍 broody as fuck

AGapInTheMarket · 18/09/2016 07:44

I have a Welsh too. He came from a puppy farm as an adult dog and despite very poor early 'training' and minimal socialisation he is a really brilliant family dog. Go the Welshies!!

phillipp · 18/09/2016 07:49

I am in a Facebook group called Springers, cockers and sprockers unite. If you are in fb I would recommend joining.

It's been as great as this place for advice on getting a pup, preparing, ongoing care etc.

Great place for name suggestions too.

A voté for an English Springer (although to be fair had a Welsh Springer growing up and she was equally wonderful).
This is Molly dressed up as a pumpkin for Halloween. Springers are great fun, absolutely crazy, loads of energy and very good with the kids.
I second what every one says re mud and water, ours has been known to jump in the shower with whoever is in there if we forget to shut the door properly.
molly is 12 now and her back legs are starting to go but she refuses to believe she is any thing but a puppy: I work from home and last week when I got up to make a cup of tea she had left me 3 tennis balls at the back door just incase I forget to factor in play time Grin

Oh my goodness, I'm totally in love. What a gorgeous boy! So pleased for you. Just popped over from the litter tray where I usually lurk and was reading your thread and then this dear little face appeared. I'm well jel!

Spudlet · 15/10/2016 20:45

There's the face of trouble Grin He's lovely!

Get that brain working for you, or he will make his own entertainment! That's my spaniel advice.

Also have ketchup in the house at all times to get rid of the smell of fox shit Hmm

GeorgeTheThird · 15/10/2016 20:47

Awwww

disorganisedmummy · 18/10/2016 18:46

Hi all, this is my boy/baby. His name is Max and he will be 3 just before Christmas. I have grown up with springers and adore them. He is quite crazy but so loving, patient and funny. He has great recall but it is pain in the arse on the lead but that's my fault for not training him properly. He is quite placid at home but loves his walks and loves to play with other dogs so we always walk where I know there are plenty of doggy friends. He really is my world and I am ridiculously soppy with him!!

Make sure you send us all a pic. Happy hunting!

This is our beautiful girl. 5 years old. Came to us 2 years ago from a rescue. We also have a working cocker. Spaniels are the best!

We have Rescuegirl, said to be half springer. I can second the water-magnet, the I-can-find-fox-poo-anywhere and the need for many long walks accompanied by ball and throwing stick. In return though you get an absolutely wonderful dog. We've had her 10 years and she's slowing down now but still mothers (and tells off) our young poodle.
