Suggestions for a barker...

Hoping to pick your brains for ideas on how to stop our pup from barking.

We have a 3 month old baby who the dog seems to be quite protective of him.
DH works away and when he's away at night DDog goes into high alert mode. He barks at any noise and will need to go and investigate. I've tried leaving the back door open so he can get outside, but that just means he's outside barking his head off, generally when I'm stuck inside feeding.

Any ideas?!

That should say:

Do you clicker train? If so click and treat when quiet.
You can also train "speak" and work back to "quiet"

We've just started clicker, so that's a good idea. Could you explain the speak working towards quiet a bit more?

It meant we were controlling the bark and then moved to rewarding the quiet.
