Which to get first - cat or dog?

We want to get a rescue dog, hopefully a cat friendly lurcher, once our elderly cat passes away which sadly is not looking like many more months . We also would want a cat, again we'd be open to rescue or possibly an oriental kitten (current cat is an Oriental with bags of character).
Is there a perceived wisdom as to which would be better to get first? Cat so it stands up for itself or dog so it's calmed and used to its surroundings? I do realise that a lot of it will be down to the personality of the dog and cat themselves.
I'm posting this in the litter tray too and wondering if the responses will be much different

Dog.

I introduced a Siamese and then a moggy to an existing (cat tested) dog and they all got on pretty well, the Siamese quite liked him as long as he didn't interfere with her affection from people and the moggy was proper curl up in bed friends with him. He died and after a bit of a gap I got a puppy.

The cats never forgave me, he's tolerated by the moggy, barely - the Siamese beat him up randomly until the day she died and made a huge production of how miserable having him in the house made her.

I think they didn't like the change where the previous dog they didn't have to adjust to the same as he was always there, if that makes sense?

Dog definitely and then get a kitten so that it grows up with a dog. I have a cat who adored my Golden Retriever and German Shepherd to the point that he would play fight with the GSD and put his head in her mouth. He was introduced to them as a nine week old kitten, after a break from dogs I introduced a Pug last year and a Pomeranian puppy this year, since the pug arrived the cat has taken to living upstairs and won't go out 🙁

Dog first definitely.

Both at the same time, then no-one is infringing on anyone's territory. We have just introduced a puppy to three cats, it's going ok, one cat seems interested in being acquaintances and bats her away if pup gets too playful, the other two cats hiss and run away. They're coming round and we know it's a slow process but would have been easier to have them all at the same time, or failing that dog first as long as it is cat friendly. Nice to have a house full though isn't it.

We had cats first, then got our lurchers. evilgingercat was absolutely fine with them from day1 - he doesn't turn tail and run from anything. He sits on the dogs and curls up with them. damagedblackandwhitegirl took longer to settle with them (but that is her all over) - she didn't move out or anything, but now she strolls past them and involves them in her complaints about life the universe and everything. The only one that doesn't get on with the dogs is our youngest cat who hates everything and everyone and moves everywhere at a million miles an hour. The worst that happens is that the dogs sometimes bark at her though.

When we got evilginger, we asked the rescue for a big, bolshy, boy and thats exactly what we got, and I'd recommend going that route.

It's MUCH easier to get a dog to accept a cat in his home than vice versa.
