Breed Choices?

Having had a rescue dog (six when I got him) and a pedigree dog from puppyhood, I've kind of narrowed down the ideal inherent qualities I'd quite like in a dog. I'm idly planning the next one and wondered if anyone thought this sounded like a specific breed? For instance, I've currently got a lurcher and amazingly he has recall but this is not very common for his breed. Also, it's not 100%. So I'd love a dog with the potential for a rock-solid recall that isn't overridden by other elements of their breed, like prey drive etc.

I'd also like one with relatively low - medium exercise requirements. An hour a day on average, nothing that's going to eat my sofa if it hasn't had a mountain trek and a half marathon jog all by 6am.

I like large, scruffy dogs. Friendly but relatively independent in that it isn't a type that needs something all the time. Some breeds do seem to be needier than others but I appreciate a lot is down to the individual dog.

Anything spring to mind?

A labradoodle isn't a breed and could inherit any number of characteristics from either line.

If I was you OP I'd register with all local rescues and specify the traits you are after, without specifying a breed, and see what comes up.

I really like the look of labradoodles but I agree that you really don't know what you're getting.

Yes I was thinking of that, Thyme. I would rescue again but we've had an utterly dreadful time with this dog (I love him but my god the issues - all unexpected given what the rescue said about him) so I'd have to be so sure and careful. I was just wondering if any particular breed came to mind so that I could do a bit of research. I'm not hugely fussy on looks, as long as it's not a tiny dog. Just a few temperament traits and maybe the possibility of training a dog from day 1 rather than when they've already had some habits fairly ingrained into them.

Leonberger or newfie. Certainly fits the large, scruffy and lowish exercise requirements. And they have little or no prey drive so recall is excellent as long gone as you start training young. They are also very independent. Hairy and muddy though. Have a leonberger now and had a newfie before so speaking from experience.

Thanks for the replies! I think Newfies and Leonbergers are too big (I sound like Goldilocks now..) but they're so lovely. I do like golden retrievers but they're quite pristine things aren't they? Very trainable though I'd imagine.

Low prey drive would be nice - my lurcher has very little prey drive unless it's a cat and that's why his recall is pretty good.

Do you know the spinonie - it's an Italian breed. The ones I have known have had lovely temperaments, though one was a real chewer
