We are getting our first puppy and I am looking at lifetime insurance cover.

What is the minimum amount you would get for vets fees 5k or 7k. Though premiums for 7k are double the 5k amount.

It is the same underwriter for each, though different providers.

All I can say is - vets bills can soon add up. And if you do need your insurance for something serious it can run out faster than you'd think.
There's a flip side of course - I pay a small fortune in insurance and I've never used it.

It is a gamble WyldFyre, and from what I can see there doesn't seem to be many options for adequate cover.

We have lifetime cover for £7K with petplan for our Labrador. It started at £28/month with the discount and is now around £36 a month at 3 years old and I know its only going to go up and up to probably £80/£90 or more (don't want to think about it!) as he ages.

We've used it twice (£500 a time) so we paid more in premiums than we've claimed, but at least had peace of mind.

Be very careful which insurer you start with as once they have pre-existing conditions it becomes nearly impossible to change. This is why we went with petplan as they may not be the cheapest, but they are one of the best.

I pay £46 a month 7k a year but we have way exceeded our premiums on treatment. She would not be here now if not for pet plan! I can't recommend enough-never a problem with claims. 5 year old pug

Definitely 7k - our cat is insured for 5k and had gone through that and more in the first six months he was with us. He was hit by a car and needed to have his pelvis put back together at vast expense by an orthopaedic specialist. Of course it happened at 2am on a Saturday so just the initial treatment at the emergency vet to stabilise him was 2k. He was a young, otherwise healthy cat and in very glad we didn't have to factor in the cost when we were making decisions about his care.
