Toilet help

We picked up our new puppy last Saturday, she's a lovely dog. I'm really struggling though with the toilet training and would really appreciate some advice as a first time pup owner. I am taking her outside really regularly - saying the command 'wee wee' and very occasionally, she does it.....lots of praise and a treat but the vast majority of times I take her out, sit quietly on the chairs whilst, she sits down or sniffs around the garden, does nothing, we come in and then usually about 5 minutes later, she's wee'd or poo'd somewhere inside. It's very frustrating but as a first time puppy owner, not sure if this is something that's just normal at 10 weeks. Any advice gratefully received!

Just ignore when she goes indoors.
At 10 weeks this is perfectly normal - she's just a baby.
It varies from dog to dog but my current girl was about 6 months before she was 100% reliable and some people say that's early

thanks - that's good to know. I've cleaned up so many piles and puddles today, combined with the night wakings, I think I'm just exhausted and at the end of my tether on the peeing front. Not sure how many times today I've said the word pee-pee, it's in the 100s!

The command is a great tool. My girl forgets to go if I have a ball. She does need to be told a few times but I make her go beforehand (making the ball a reward)

Oh and she's almost 5!

I think the 'wee wee' command takes a while to settle in. Our dog is now 18 weeks and despite us saying wee wee every time she went, she only just seems to be responding to it.

When we took our puppy out we stayed out until she had done at least something.

Sometimes it took 5 mins, sometimes 15 minutes.

She was 11 (almost 12) weeks when we got her though and isn't a fan of pooing inside. While we had a few wee accidents I think we only ever had 3 indoor poos.

its so dependent upon where they came from that all dpups will come from different experiences... I've had 5 week old dpups shout to go out to poo, but then its to be expected that when busy with something else they will forget easily and have notsomuch control so just go where they are.

dpup cannot be expected to go through the night and i always leave ample newspaper down for nighttimes, in a small area, moving the same newspaper closer and closer to the door (or a tray) then moving it outside, so they will learn go in a tray rather than on the lawn... i hate sliding in poo! and not so good for the kids either

I also associate a word with the function, to prompt.

Yes to keeping up the put out as soon as they wake, praise and allow back in upon performing and repeat regularly.

You may have more catching up to do than others, it all depends what they've been used to.

With our cocker it was just constant vigilance that toilet trained her. Outside every time she drank, ate, as soon as she got up and every half an hour to an hour in between those time. I used to stand with her, and say "have a wee! Have a wee!" constantly until she did, and then massively fuss her. If you catch her about to squat, or already toileting in the house, pick up immediately and take outside. Helps of you have tiling! It took about 2 months for her to be completely house broken, so hang on in there! Just remember never to punish for accidents, and lots of praise for outside wees and poos. She will get there!

I'll echo the constant vigilance. We picked up our puppy at 11 weeks old and she is now 14 and I think we have cracked it. We kept her fairly limited to an area of the house and that's our kitchen/family room with access to the garden. I tried to preempt constantly her toilet needs and took her out a LOT, waiting for ages, walking round the garden etc and big praise when she went. If she started to go indoors I would pick her up and take her straight out. After 3 weeks of doing this she is now almost 100 percent trained touch wood. Firstly she has better bladder control and can go longer and secondly she has just now worked out to go to back door when she wants out. I also have bells on the door and she does nudge them with her nose when she wants out, this has only started last few days I may add!!
So, try and keep puppy to small area of house, follow when on move, pick straight up if starts to squat or even interrupt if starts to wee and straight out! It'll click eventually, yes, time consuming and frustrating but will pass and try to not let it stop enjoying your puppy! Re night time, we crate and she does not pee in crate, she has last wee at 1030/11 by us putting her out till she goes and then she does now sleep all night, whining in morning to let me now she's up.

We got our pup in the dead of winter and the little fucker wanted to play everytime we went out to train him. :) We just ignored him, and kept at it and never went back in unless he did something. Soon the penny dropped and he would wee/poo, we played some and ran back in to escape the cold. He was fully reliable at 16 weeks.
