Turmeric for dogs?

Ddog has been put on anti- inflammatories for his knees ( whole other thread about this ). Three days into a 10 day course and while he is very happy and obviously in much less pain, he vomited this morning and hasn't eaten all day :(
I'm a big believer in turmeric as an anti- inflammatory for humans - can it work for dogs?

I've seen plenty of people swear by turmeric for their dogs but I don't think there's much evidence that it actually has any quantifiable effect.

There are different anti-inflammatories available and he might be better off swapped onto a different one. DDog2 can't have meloxicam at all as it makes her violently sick but she's absolutely fine on robenacoxib which she's on long term for IVDD.

Poor ddog but I wouldnt assue the two are necessarily related. A dog vomitting and off food for a day is nothing to worry about as long as still drinking and seeming brightenough. I would see what tomorow brings. Hope he's doing better by then

He's on Previcox but will stop it and speak tot he vet on Monday to see if there's an alternative. Got him to eat some chiecken just now, so at least that's something.

Bubble there's a huge FB group called Turmeric Users Group which advocates the Golden Paste for animals and humans. Huge praise for it with dogs/horses/humans.

I haven't got my arse together to use it consistently yet so can't recommend firsthand but people seem to absolutely swear by it.

The Golden Paste Co (based in Harrogate) also have Golden Paste ready made for purchase, as well as other stuff. On FB as well. I received my TuGo bar today (1st order) which I'm going to start when back from hols, so I'm quite excited

I'm sure it wouldn't do your dog any harm but no definitive evidence it would do him any good either

If he needs pain relief and you think he's reacting badly to previcox then I'd ask your vet for an alternate painkiller first

Turmeric is included in some of the joint supplements, the evidence seems to suggest that omega 3 is the most helpful supplement, the glucosamine and chondrotin ( important to use dog supplement as bioavailability is different to humans), green lip muscle extract next and then Turmeric falls into a category with other things that are helpful for some. The supplements main seem to reduce the amount of NSAIDs that need to be used. If your dog has vomited yes stop the previcox and chat to your vet. In my area there is a really horrible V&D virus going about ( along with a KC Epidemic for fun), so they may suggest retrying in a short while in case it was a mild dose of virus.

Pretty sure the Previcox has made him sick, and not a virus, as he is otherwise in better form than he's been for weeks. He even turned down a tin of sardines which is unheard of.
I had started him on omega 3 and doggy glucosamine a couple of weeks ago when I started to suspect a problem ( though wrongly was thinking maybe his hips ) Probably wouldn't do any harm to add some turmeric as well.
Vet on Monday it is.

I'd sort out the drug situation first...mine can't have NSAIDs and so he doesn't have turmeric either as it's a potential stomach irritant as well.

I got to a fantastic vet who put my lovely lovely Labrador cross on the following
Tumeric or Tumeric and burdock - by Pukka
Eskimo fish oil
Gluscomite (sp)
a monthly injection
Half an anti inflammatory
She died yesterday nearly 14 years
We all loved her deeply and she gave us such joy
I'm still crying
But on this from 10 years to May this year she was loved her long walks and was in great form

Also one of the anti inflammatories caused stomach problems after about 3 years so they changed it to one she could tolerate

The vet has given ddog a new different anti inflammatory and also omeprazole for his stomach, so fingers crossed.

Our vet suggested golden paste for our dog on an "might not help but worth a try as it won't do any harm" basis.
