Worm/Flea Treatment

Novice New Puppy Owner here!

We have our new pup home and she is due her working tablet on Monday. Now I know the vet will supply at a hefty price and wondered if I should just buy online, is this what most people do? Is they much difference between drontal and cestem for example or is the vets supply a superior type??
Plus Flea Treatment, is there a particular brand which is better???

Frontline is the only one that's ever worked for us! Cheaper from asda than the vets!!

Worming tablets are quite cheap anyway so even getting them from the vets wouldn't save you much.

But for things like Advocate, I'd get a prescription note and buy online.
Even taking into account the cost of writing out a prescription note, you'd save money buying online especially if you have a large breed.

My vet recently started out a care plan where you pay X amount each month.
You get your monthly flea treatment, the worming tablets, kennel cough vaccine, annual booster, some dental toothpaste, brush or treats, some dog food and two free check ups per year. Plus a discount for neutering or spaying. Think it was 12 pound something per month for a small dog.

Ask your vet if they do something similar.

Myself, I didn't get it because some of the stuff I don't use, like the dog food, kennel cough vac plus I already have loads of dental stuff at home and they were neutered. It works out cheaper for me to get all the worming and flee treatment online, and pay for the booster myself plus the consultation fees.

It depends on what you are most concerned about treating/preventing, really. Drontal and Cestem are the same thing and can be obtained online without a prescription, whereas something like Milbemax (also licensed for lungworm, heartworm) will need a prescription.

Ditto flea stuff, Frontline and other fipronil based stuff is fine in certain situations particularly when used in conjunction with household sprays but for an infestation it's best to use something with environmental control, Stronghold or similar.

There are other broad spectrum products like Advocate, Bravecto, Nexgard Spectra etc., your vet can tell you which is most suitable for your puppy and household - and then write a prescription for you if it's cheaper to buy them online.
