Ours had his jabs this morning so one more week and he can go for a walk. Slept well in his crate last night, no whining.
Toilet training is going backwards however. How is everyone else doing this? The traffic in our book of taking him out hourly or 'whenever he looks like he wants to go' isn't working as he never looks like he wants to go-he just goes!

Hanspannerly · 01/09/2016 22:06

Stanley seems to be doing so well. I can't wait til we can take milo for a walk at the weekend. Toilet training wise I've quickly realised that I have to take him ALL the time 😂 He has a crate so when he wakes up or we let him out of crate or if he's just been lying down, we take him out and then after all meals and then every hour in the day. After a toilet trip he's rewarded with a treat immediately and then we play for 15 mins, snuggle for 5 and then he's tired and goes back in the crate. When I'm in the kitchen I'll leave the door open to the crate but if I can't watch him I'll shut the door. Last trip out is 11 and then I set an alarm for 2.30 and 6 to take him out. I'm no expert but we've had minimal accidents !

ConkersDontScareSpiders · 02/09/2016 11:32

Thanks :) I'm going to have to be far more vigilant.im hoping it will be easier when the kids go back to school as they will play with him and whilst doing so forget to take him out, or else I will make the mistake of trusting them to take him out, and then they get distracted and forget. At least when it's all on me I'll know it's definitely being done. I work from home and I'm not sure how much work will actually get done mind, but still!

weegiemum · 03/09/2016 18:16

Took Tibby out to a local country park today - he had a ball. Lots of new smells and sounds and lots of other doggies to say hello to. Walks are verrrrrrry slow at the moment - like going out with a toddler! (which I suppose it is!).

Hanspannerly · 04/09/2016 07:36

Milos had a great few days. No accidents and we've started allowing him into the living room for short periods to snuggle. He had his first walk yesterday which was hilarious and very editable. And then the rain- turns out he's not a fan of rain Grin I had to carry him into the garden all of yesterday!! How is everyone else doing?

Hanspannerly · 04/09/2016 07:36

*excitable

ConkersDontScareSpiders · 04/09/2016 22:09

Not well.we are going backwards on the toilet training. But we have had lots of fun today trying to train him to come back when called and to sit.
And I've had a lovely snuggle whilst watching Poldark this eve. Just going to try and sneak him into the crate now.

Archduke · 04/09/2016 23:19

Hi all, we have just got a 91/2 week old Schnauzer. On the whole he's great, toilet training ok when we take him outside every 30 mins - hour.

We are having problems with him barking at night when in his crate - we may well be doing it wrong but he barks and barks pretty much all night long. I have read conflicting advice on the internet about whether to go to him or not, so those of you who have had successful nights with crate training can you give me some advice?

We've only had him for 3 nights (so I understand that it's all weird with us and he's missing his siblings). He's also crated in the sitting room and not in our bedroom.

TrionicLettuce · 04/09/2016 23:40

This is a great guide to crate training.

At that age they're still very tiny babies and it's a huge upheaval for them to go from being with mum and litter mates pretty much 24/7 to being expected to sleep alone in a strange place.

I would either move him into your room or sleep downstairs with him for now. Once he's a bit more settled you can then gradually move him to where you want him to sleep long term or you gradually retreat away back into your bedroom.

Archduke · 05/09/2016 00:05

Thanks Trionic, clearly we're expecting too much from the poor pooch.

I'll read your link - it does seem as though I need to have him in the bedroom with me at night

ConkersDontScareSpiders · 05/09/2016 07:26

We've had two bad nights out of the 10 we've had ours here. He is 12 weeks old today. On Those two nights after about an hour of prolonged barking and whining. (and me panicking about the neighbours being disturbed), I moved the crate into my room and he went off to sleep straight away. The following nights I put him back in the kitchen and he was fine.
I suppose they are only tiny and still getting used to things and sometimes need the reassurance.
I can't recall any of my childhood dogs doing this but I know realise it's because my mum dealt with it all!!

Deckthehallswithjammydodgers · 05/09/2016 19:45

Hiya we picked up our mini daschund on Friday night he's settling in well he has a dose of the runs after the breeder worked him before we left for home vets on wed night for second injections he's 11 weeks and so cute.

Shmary · 05/09/2016 23:51

Four months old shih tzu crossed with a shihtzu/maltese cross. Called Bette. Stubborn, loves big dogs, bitey and all over the place with toilet training but best decision I've ever made. Sure it will all fit into place Wink

All these pups are so cute!

We have a 21 week sprocker.

We found she settled in the Crate with a soft toy that smelled of the kids (she slept draped over it like she did with her litter mates) that was about the same size as her and sitting with her until she settle. Even when we got up in the middle of the night. We slowly moved further away each night. And sat with her for less time.

It's a very gradual thing, but I think it was definitely worth it.

MiddleAgedMother · 10/09/2016 14:40

We are getting mixed messages on when you can walk our puppy outside. The vets in the same practice have even said different things! She's 12 weeks old and had her 2nd jabs a week ago today.
Is it too soon?

PopadomPointer · 10/09/2016 19:50

Our vet said it was ok to take pup out 1 week after her 2nd jabs.

PrudenceDear · 10/09/2016 22:05

Hello, can I join too please?

Our pup is almost 10 weeks and is very nippy at the moment.

Any tips for trying to stop him. He nips, the children squeal, he nips more, the children squeal more and it all degenerates... I keep telling the children not to make a noise hug his bites really do hurt and my sons t- shirt was ripped today.

We are trying to arm ourselves with a toy to switch his attention to.

MiddleAgedMother · 10/09/2016 22:11

Prudence - we are having exactly the same problem with our 11 week old and DDs shirt ripped today.
Long hair a magnet too.
Have tried "ouch" and turning away - after disengaging teeth - but no luck.
Hoping someone a little further down the line comes along to help soon!
And apols everyone for gate crashing - hope you don't mind me joining too

MiddleAgedMother · 10/09/2016 22:12

Thanks Pomadom.
One of the vets said that.
Then the other said 10 days before going to and another 10 days before the park. 3 weeks in total!

PrudenceDear · 10/09/2016 22:48

Let's hope someone has a good solution. We've tried the ouch method but that just makes him worse! Ignoring him is impossible as his nips really do hurt. I find it impossible to walk down the garden as he's nipping and hanging from my clothes or limbs!!

phillipp · 11/09/2016 07:32

Dpup is older than yours prudence but all that worked was ignoring it and stopping play. We tried yelping etc nothing else worked

Ds is five and I taught him if puppy started biting he was to stand up, look away from the dog, be quiet and fold his arms.

Ds saw it as a game. It took a few weeks but it reduced and then stopped completely.

myfriendnigel · 11/09/2016 09:01

Ours is a nipper too. We just say no! In a very stern voice and stop playing. It seems to be working a bit.
Still having a nightmare with the toilet training. He now goes out of his own accord when the door is open and has a wee in the spot we have been taking him to-and then runs back in and had a wee indoors as well. I can't seem to reason with him Grin

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 12/09/2016 11:46

I adopted a 16 week husky cross beauceron yesterday. Doesn't look as tiny and puppy like as the babies on this thread, but very sweet- photo to follow (when I figure it out).

Archduke · 15/09/2016 06:21

Middleadedmother we were told that it's fine to take the puppy outside after his second set of jabs but only to associate with dogs we know that are vaccinated and to keep him away from dog poo.

Also not to take him to a dog park or beach until he's had his 3rd set of jabs at about 16 weeks. So we've been walking him around the block but being careful not to take him places where he's exposed to Parvo Virus.

Our puppy is now about 11 weeks old I think.

weegiemum · 18/09/2016 23:32

Tibby, now 13 weeks, went to his first puppy training class today. He was very good, but the nicest thing was that one of his littermates was also there! They had a really good bark and sniff at each other.
