Horse sounds like he's had it really rough! Our breeder spoke about the parvo jab and how serious it can get if they contract it! Hope he makes a quick recovery!

RubyCav · 29/07/2016 21:55

Horse that sounds dreadful. Any ideas how he got it?

RubyCav is 10weeks old today and had his first vaccinations this morning. He was a total wimp - squealing for a few minutes after it had happened. Still loved the vet once he had stopped squealing though. One week till walkies!!!

He's a fab lap dog - spends the evenings sleeping on my lap. He's also perfectly happy left in his crate, even if I go out for a short while.

Toilet training has been a bit of a nightmare. He keeps holding on for coming in, even if we were out for half an hour at a time. So now I take him out for 5mins, if he doesn't go I carry him around inside for a while then try again. Still feels like for every two steps forward we go one back.

ImBrian · 29/07/2016 22:13

Poor thing Horse sound like he's had a hard start.

Davos there's a website which compares different dog foods but I can't remember what it's called.

Mines had her last injections and chip today, there was a lot of squealing!

HorseDentist · 29/07/2016 23:34

No real idea where he picked it up from. None of his litter mates have been affected by it. It has an incubation period of 5-10 days and he started showing symptoms 6 days after we collected him. The only thing we can think of is our garden as Foxes can be carriers, we didn't know this until afterwards.

Such a shame as he was perfectly toilet trained before and now he can't go out. Hopefully it won't undo all of his training and he will pick it up again when he's allowed out in 4 weeks time.

RubyCav · 29/07/2016 23:51

Foxes Shock. I didn't know they could spread it! Thank goodness I don't get foxes where I've moved to, we used to live where there were loads. That's a rather frightening thought.

Fingers crossed he'll pick toilet training straight back up, once he can go outside again. Also that socialisation will go well despite having to be a bit delayed.

Flowers You've had such a tough start to puppyhood.

ChocolateRaisin · 30/07/2016 06:07

Horse- your poor pup! I hope he is feeling better and able to go out asap. What a worry for you.

Re food, an easy way to see if food is any good is to look at the ingredients. If there are any cereals in it, then it's not great. Dogs apparently don't digest them well and they are the dog equivalent of feeding macdonalds. I'm feeding fish4dogs which has very good reviews. Orijen is also supposed to be very good. I've swapped my older dog onto fish4dogs and I've definitely noticed a difference for the better.

I'm having issues with mine eating little stones. I've just gone round the garden and sprayed everything that resembles a stone with vinegar.

1st jabs today!

Rubberduckies · 30/07/2016 06:33

Springer Holly is 13 weeks oil. I'm so excited to take her for her first walk today! She started off terrified (from gundog kennels so no socialisation) next couple of weeks she was calm and cuddly and compliant...and now she's got a personality and is very cheeky! Toilet training was easy peasy and I put it down to her being kennelled as a baby. Biting isn't too bad, she goes for feet when very excited but when calm lies nicely by us. It's so funny that she gets so excited if we just look at, she loves people!

Someone asked about poo and dog food. Has her poo been soft since you first got her? Holly was on Eukanuba which isn't rated the best and her poos have got better as I've gradually switched to applaws. I think the website is allaboutdogfood.com or something like that. I don't think purina is that good from memory...

Rubber, thanks for the link will give it a a good read this morning X

HorseDentist · 30/07/2016 20:55

The Parvo Dust Ball had had his first jabs (again) today. He cried like a little baby but loved all the fuss he got from his friends at the vets.

We have a bit of an issue at the moment with him not eating much. Supposed to be eating little and often in order to regain weight but he isn't interested the majority of the time. The food isn't an issue, he likes that. He just keeps waking away from his bowl without showing any interest.

suffolkpunch85 · 30/07/2016 21:31

This is our 13 week old pup, Freida, who we rehomed from the RSPCA. Fab with ds (3) but wails like a banshee at night.

She wouldn't eat much of the RSPCA dry puppy food so we got some
Lily's Kitchen wet food and mixed it

RubyCav · 30/07/2016 23:22

Horse do you damp the food? Ruby Cavs food says to damp it but he kept walking away, I absent mindedly gave him it dry once and he wolfed it down. So now he just has it dry and eats it straight away. Maybe "parvo dust ball" would be happier if his was either wetter or dryer than you're doing it?

Suffolk OMG (don't think I've ever said that on mumsnet before) your pup is amazing! She looks like someone has drawn the black spots on her nose and lips. I also dont think I've ever seen a dog with such a pink nose! Is she some kind of hairless/ hairless cross?

suffolkpunch85 · 31/07/2016 07:55

Ruby, she looks like she has a snout doesn't she Smile. She is a Chinese Crested hairless variety although can't confirm exact parentage as her mum was taken from the breeders into the RSPCA. She needs sun cream on in nice weather!

CharlieBubbles88 · 01/08/2016 12:53

This is our new pup, we got him just over two weeks ago, he is nearly ten weeks old

We weren't planning on getting him but he needed a home and had been taken away from his Mum at around five weeks Shock Hmm

So far he seems really happy and a great addition to the family. Getting there with toilet training although like another PP we can have him in the garden for 30 mins and then he'll come in and do a wee. Mainly going outside but still a few accidents

Moonandstarsandback · 02/08/2016 09:30

Davos, I would suggest changing foods. My pup (now 8 months) had similar bowel movements. Runny/soft and lots of it! I changed from science plan (which my last dog was fine with) to Millie's wolf heart and within a day his poos were less and solid!!! You can switch quite quickly with it too. You have to buy from their website though. But I'm sure there's lots to try to see if it suits your pup better. Smile

davos · 02/08/2016 16:43

Thanks moon, we are going to change her food. Thanks for the recommendation. It's so hard to pick a new one!

Anyone know of a good link (or have advice) on what is too much exercise for puppies. We have been taking dpup on short walks, about 10-15 minutes, but when we get back she seems to have more energy than when we went and starts sprinting round the garden.

I am worried she is getting too much exercise.

bluebird3 · 02/08/2016 19:38

Horse dentist so sorry your pup has had such a hard start hit glad he's doing well...he is gorgeous :)

Here is my fur baby! She's 10 weeks mini schnauzer and we got her on Friday. Very good in the crate and only ha a couple accidents in 4 days. Not a bad start!

Nettle what a gorgeous dog

How's toilet training going with everyone else? Frustrating with ours at the moment, she will we and poo when taken outside but seems to have no inclination to go to the door to ask to go out

CharlieBubbles88 · 08/08/2016 09:19

Toilet training for us is a bit hit and miss. Sometimes he goes to the door, other times he does a wee dance so we can usually tell and get him outside. But every now and again he sneaks of to another room and does it there

scotchbunny · 08/08/2016 09:46

We are attempting toilet training on a schedule after reading the Ceaser dog whisperer book. We have a patch of paper indoors still but key is consistency and constant supervision, time consuming to say the least but I'm told it'll pay off!

Up in morning and I lift her out of the crate and open back door then put her out as I found if I ask her to follow me she peed at the back door before I got it open! Then I stay out as she might take 2 or even 3 attempts to fully empty her bladder. Then I take her out 15 mins after each meal, after each nap and after a play session and stay out until she goes with praise afterwards. If I catch her starting to go in the house I say no and pick her up and take her out. Then praise if she finishes outside. Now, we are only a week in and she's no where near to standing at the back door to alert me to go out but I'm told it'll fall into place if I follow a strict schedule. She'll soon see her house as her den and if you restrict her to small area of house to begin with its easier. The first day she'll not have someone here all the time is end of next week so we will section off half the kitchen/family room with crate one end and paper/puppy pads other end and just have to see how she gets on.

We also have a string of bells on the door which I jingle before I open door. I was advised eventually she will jingle them herself if she needs out which also apparently prevents them barking at the door, hmm, time will tell! I'm persevering anyway!

davos · 08/08/2016 17:24

Oh so cute!!

Dpup has been easy to to toilet train. Although last night she tried to go in the living room, which she hasn't done before and gave no indication she was going to go.

We also have a fairly strict schedule. She goes out First thing, every 1.5 hours (was every hour when we got her) , after naps, meals and play then last thing. And of course anytime she is looking like she might be going to go.

I want to do the bells on the door thing too. Might get some this week.

We have also managed to crack 'here' and 'sit'. Just need her to grasp 'down' next Grin

What breed are you going for Unlockable? Grin

Also is anyone here daft enough like me to have a baby and decide they want a puppy? And has it been hard with baby wanting to crawl, etc?
