anyone else still think about a dog they had years ago?

I often think about my dog that died 4 years ago. Still have the occasional cry too .

Anyone else?

I had an amazing dog as a young teenager, who was with me up until my mid twenties. He was a fantastic dog who never left my side through some really tough times, in a sense he was more reliable and there for me than my own parents and I adored him. He was perfectly behaved, lived for me to tell him what to do and came everywhere with me without any trouble at all. He was huge but loved everyone and everything.

He died aged 15 a few years ago and I still think of him but now the memories make me smile more than cry.

I now have two other dogs who are lovely in their own ways but I still sometimes wonder how they are so badly behaved compared to him

Oh yes. They never leave our hearts, do they.

Yes, she was an ugly mutt but I adored her and she was my shadow.

It's more than 12 years ago now.....and I'm crying.

We got a dog when I was a teen. I'm in my 40s now. We still talk about him. Loved that mutt!!
I think it's perfectly normal. They are a part of your family and you love them.

Our lovely border terrier died when I was 21. She was 16. I couldn't remember life without her. I am 40 now and can still feel her in my arms the night we took her to be PTS. I can actually feel the weight of her.

I've had two children since and still remember that moment physically, more so than I remember how I held them as babies I think!

Great sloppy springer is now staring up at me as my tears drop on his head!

Yes, mine died 14 years ago and I still get a lump in my throat thinking about her

I lost my lovely Max over twenty years ago. He came to me as a gundog in his retirement (from my dad) who didn't expect him to live long.
He'd never even set foot in a house when I got him. He was an absolute dream of a dog (apart from when he'd been in the bin!)
I still think of him and possibly shed a few tears.

I do. It's 1 year today since I had my gsd put to sleep and still gutted

Yes, I thinks that's normal for anyone who loved a dog. Mine was pts 16 years ago and I still miss her.

Oh yes. .

oh. all the time! my childhood dogs and my dogs that have shared my grown up life. Still have their pictures on the wall and still cry sometimes. But generally i remember all the good times we shared and i smile. My life would be so much poorer without dogs in it.

Absolutely and they have both been gone for a decade now. We scattered their ashes at their favourite beach and when I feel sad and am missing them I imagine them running on the beach together, barking hyserically and chasing sea gulls. It's impossibe to be sad when I have that image in my mind. Dog heaven.

My God, I really thought with time the feeling would pass. I lost my boy 10 months ago and I can't think about him without welling up. I struggle to even say his name out loud. I'm fighting back tears now.

Flaming dogs, they steal your heart and take a piece of it with them when they go.

I often read these words and find them a comfort.

My little sweetheart, I miss so much, every single day. Now Im crying.

Only 2 months since I lost my beautiful girl but I know she'll stay with me til my last breath. It's been 22 years since my lab left me as well and she will be waiting for me too.

I have my girl's brother still here but he's not that long for this world. I think my heart will break when he goes.

Yes. We always had dogs as a family, but I had my own dog when I was 15. She was amazing and we had a fantastic bond. She died in 1999, and I still think about her a lot, but I don't get upset any more.

A few years ago, I was just browsing on a dog rescue website, as you do, and I saw a dog up for adoption that looked just like her. When I read the description, I found that the rescue centre had given her the same name as my old dog. I showed DH, thinking he was going to tell me not to be silly, but he just said, "We've got to have her." She's been with us for the last six years.

Kes was put to sleep on 6th November 2010. She was awesome. One in a million.

I miss my gorgeous GSD girl terribly. I'm still riddled with guilt as I recall her looking at me with love, devotion and trust as the vet prepared the syringes to put her to sleep. Like a pp, I vividly recall the weight of her as she slumped forward with my arms around her. A bond like no other dog I've ever known or owned.

My dad never forgot the dog he had when he was a kid. He still has vivid memories of the dog, and the day it was put down.

He loved that dog so much he says it was the reason he has gotten another dog in his entire life, despite being such an animal lover. I remember being really sad when he first told me the story, because he's so good with animals - he can make the strangest little noises and get them to follow him around and let him pet them, from cats and dogs to donkeys and penguins.
