Tibetan Terriers

Hello

We are looking to introduce a puppy into our home from August onwards and have researched ALOT. We have decided on a Tibetan Terrior and I would love to hear of any dog owners who have experience of them?
We have 2 children who are older, a big garden and plenty of hills and parks to walk. From research they are loving, loyal and playful family friendly dogs

The only one I know well is not allowed off her lead as she's very unpredictable with dogs and can't be trusted ,she was well socialised ,good with children and is ok with dogs she knows ( provided she's on her lead) .

My dogs 'best friend' is a Tibetan Terrier, he is loving, playful and to be honest a little bit dopey. He only needs one good walk / two short walks a day and he is exhausted. Remember they take quite a lot of grooming.
We have a few round here and they all seem to have a good temperament. He is protective over my dog but will just bark if he thinks someone is going to hurt her although he has no issue play fighting with her :-). I have looked after him and it was lovely to have a dog for a bit which was more chilled then my spaniel. Overall I can see them being a wonderful family dog.

Very useful information. I'm drawn to them in terms of their temperaments and good to know they may need special attention on training off lead. Grooming, yes, aware regular grooming is required, the plan is my children need to be in charge of brushing in between hair cuts!

They have an undercoat and from what I have heard it can be tough to keep on top of it... not sure I would give that responsibility to kids completely although of course they should help.

Looks like I will need to research a good grooming kit! Thanks. My eldest is 12 so hopeful she'll help a lot.

My DM has two, they are lovely dogs.

But grooming is very high maintenance, with two coats.

Going through a muddy puddle, needs a proper wash with a bucket or shower were the wet/ dirt has got. You can't just towel off the dirt.

They get hot very very quickly, so need shaving as soon as the sun comes out.

Again lovely dogs though, and if you are use to, or happy with dogs that need a lot of attention on their coats, then go for it.

Oh in snow, they gather loads and loads of snow balls on them! Again a warm water bath only way to get them off.

We are in Scotland and going by the lack of sun around here we hopefully won't need to shave fully for heat reasons! Snow on the other hand....

It's not a full shave sorry to mislead you, but its close.
Doesn't have to be sunny, just once things start warming up.

I always wonder how the hell they'd survive in the Tibetan mountains, snow, sunshine rain/mud

Just seen this thread. We have a Tibetan Terrier and we're about to get another. The one we have is the best-natured dog I've ever come across. She loves everyone, all other dogs, and as she's food orientated, was easily trained.

They're happy to laze about - on their back - or zoom at 100mph around the park. Ours has great recall.
The only problems can be separation anxiety (just build up slowly time away) and they can be stubborn - they need to see a reason to do something!

Overall, brilliant family dog with a great personality.

I have one and she has been quite a challenging dog, hyper, resource guarding and aggressive to other dogs. If you have a look on FB groups they do have a tendency to be hyper, destructive and suffer from separation anxiety.

You don't say what you are looking for in a dog or why you chose this breed but I'd urge you to have a rethink.

The coat is an unbelievable nightmare. I've had long haired dogs before ( as well as long haired cats and rabbits) and I thought I was prepared but you just look at a TT coat and it gets tangled.

I think it's hard with any breed, you hear good and then one bad. But over all I have researched the breed thoroughly as having lovely temperaments and wonderful family pets with this as an important factor. So each dog must have different personalities with your dog being a very different description to all the other stay owners I have heard from! The breeder I have been in contact with has lovely TTs with the mother having most importantly a lovely temperament. We importantly wanted a non shedding breed so all the breeds we researched, Lhasas, poodles, shitzus etc all have high grooming needs so I am well aware of the grooming needs and prepared for grooming parlour costs!

Yes, I shall do that. I'm also reading a puppy book and hope to be as prepared as possible with training, socialising and shaping our puppy's personality!

We had a female TT she lived till she was 15. She was no trouble at all , got on with other dogs and cats, she was perfect with my children never once growled. Could be left alone and apart from chewing a trainer and a few bits as a very young pup she wasn't destructive. She was very greedy and would rummage in the bin if she could, and as she hated being groomed we had her regularly clipped. My fault should have brushed her more as a puppy. Over all she was a good pet, but not cuddly or affectionate.

Im a home Breeder of Tibetan Terriers and have been for a number of years,
I have four of them that live in the home with me and my family
They are the most loving and devoted dogs
They are called humans in furry coats as they are just like toddlers
I got my first a year before my son was born so 19 years ago and I've never looked back
Please go to Tibetan Terrier Chit Chat on Facebook and you'll be in Tibetan Terrier heaven when you see them all.
You need to chat to a lot of owners till your satisfied your happy with your decision

Not all coats tangle I have four of them and out of the four one tangles but she's brushed daily and kept in a puppy cut so therefor we have no real problem if your in a routine then they are fine.

I have 2 lovely adult Tibetans & have just taken in one of the rouge pups (8 months) as described by some posters.
My 2 adults are lovely, gentle and very laid back ... one is the laziest dog imaginable, he rather sit all day by your feet than go for extend walks! My second one is more lively, but still a sweet natured dog. She is great fun and loves to be active... she is doing rather well at obedience and agility.
My rouge pup has only been here just over a week. All I can say is, with us she is the sweetest dog imaginable! Albeit she has not experienced any form of training and has been left to her own devices. The result is a noisy, destroyer that's cute and fluffy. I have to admit, she is well adapted to entertaining herself! (2 scatter cousins, odd shoes, watering can and some paperwork later.)
If you get your puppy, make sure you have the time and commitment. Tibetans thrive on their owners attention and you should be prepared for a lot of training to get the best out of your dog. Think beyond the usual 10-12 weeks puppy class! My advice would be structured training for the first 9- 12 months, if first time dog owner.
They are an intelligent little dog and like children, need to be mentally stimulated. They can achieve great things if treated kindly!

That was my post a a year ago now! Happy to say I have my lovely 1 year old TT sitting next to me now, she is fantastic and adored by our family. Lovely happy, snuggly, loyal and playful dog!

Maybe you could join TT site on FB, I found it so useful when my TT was sickly. It is a closed group that grew from 400 2 years ago to 7000. Lovely supportive site.
