camping with dogs

Hoping to take her with us in the summer to the Scottish islands..any tips on best campsites, equipment to take... Anything really

Towels. Take lots of towels!

There is a new page on Facebook called "Caravan and camping uk with pets" that has a lot of suggestions for dog friendly sites.

We take one of those corkscrew things that you can wind into the ground and attach dogs to. We use half a lunge line (for horses) for each dog. Our dogs love camping (caravan for us).

honeyroar may I ask, please, what type and how many dogs you take to campsites? and are they quiet at night?

We have two labs and one Romanian fluffball X Jack Russell sort of thing. Yes they're quiet at night. And we live on a farm in the middle of nowhere with few neighbour's, so they're not used to hearing neighbours noise. I think they're calmer away than at home, because they like sleeping near to us and being with us all day, they feel more of a pack. At home they sleep in the kitchen..

Thank you, I'm not sure it would work with my dogs. Four German shepherds accustomed to warding off threats while we lived overseas.

Would they not quieten down if you to,d them to? You'd be near enough to just put a hand on them and say it's ok..

All the Caravan Club & Camping & Caravan Club sites take dogs, no limit on numbers. We've seen people with half a dozen in tow. Most private sites accept dogs too but best to check & some limit you to two dogs.
We take three with us, was four till a couple of years ago. They are quiet at night.
They get very excited though when they see all the bags & boxes come out for packing as they love going.

I think you'll find that all the caravan club sites will allow dogs, as long as they're a certain breed.
We have 2 Dobermanns and a border terrier, but the only dog allowed on sites is the border terrier. Funny that....2 Dobermanns are great, it's the border terrier that's a trouble maker. We are well set up for our caravan, we have special fencing that we put up, that none of the dogs can get out of, works really well.
Shame that the poor old Dobermanns usually have to stay at home though!

I took my dog to Skye camping with us. I bought one of those stakes for the ground that have a long lead so you can tie them up outside and can't escape anywhere, I would definitely recommend this as you don't want them wandering around stealing other people food etc.

I also put my dogs bed in the front compartment "shoe section" of the tent. she woke us up in the middle of the night shivering and trying to paw at the door into the tent. I woke up and let her sit on me for a while and felt her shake. I did put her back to her bed but it happened again so I brought her in to the actual tent and she was happy as larry! So cosy at the bottom of our feet :)
I also researched dog friendly pubs to take her into in case we didn't feel like eating by our tent one night. so we found one bar and she was pretty good in there but be aware if your dogs don't like loud things or too many people you cant just leave them in a tent!

Second the stakes to tie them up to. And also put coats on them at night, they get cold too! I bundle mine up in coats and blankets or he's shivering.

A fleece or towelling coat is good too, to dry them off before they come in the main tent.

Suno that's sad. I love Doberman dogs. My mum has a Border Terrorist (pun intended!) I would probably be much more wary of the little feisty terrier!!!

I'm planning to take NaiceDog with us this summer.

Will be buying one of those fabric type crates for him to sleep in. Hopefully with a thick squashy bed inside he'll be warm enough (he's a lot bald!).

Honey I can't do tents and DH can't see why anyone would complain, so I would be in a caravan with a man who thinks he doesn't need to do anything to quieten 4 dogs

He wants to try, and I can see myself coming home after the first night and leaving him to it.

We take our gsd camping with us, we have a campervan and he sleeps in his squashy bed under the dining table. Or on the end of our bed when I chuck Dh out into the other bed when he snores.
He's trained to "speak" and "quiet" and only does a little grumble if there's something he's not sure of. We use a corkscrew spike and a long fabric line, just make sure it's not too long. He likes it when we have the awning up and put his bed in there while we're sitting out. I've seen people crate their dogs in their awning and they were happy enough.
