House training - what age does it click?

Hi

I'm just after some experiences of how long your dog took to be house trained please? We have a 9 week old pup and it's going pretty well. He's dry in the crate from midnight to 6/7am and we are working on it in the daytime, never leaving unattended, taken out very regularly etc. We are only having one or two accidents a day but I think this is more down to us pouncing on him the moment he eats, drinks or wakes up! I realise that we still have several weeks (hopefully not months!) ahead of us before we crack it completely. Just wondering about other experiences please! When do they start to look to go outside?

9 weeks? He's a star

It depends on the pup and the breed, could be anything from 4 months onwards

LilCamper · 22/05/2016 10:41

Most pups aren't considered reliably house trained until around 8 months.

LilCamper is bang on. 8 months in our case.

Thanks, it's good to hear other experiences. I think he's doing really well so far! When I was growing up we had a lab and I remember my mum saying how quickly she was housetrained, my memory was about 11 weeks but mum just confirmed it was 4 months and she felt that was really good. I'm working weekdays and DH is currently working weekends so there is always one of us about for company and supervise! He also is enjoying the company of our older dog. I have never really "done" the puppy thing before, my dogs have always been at least a year old so this is all new territory for me. Coffee has been my friend! He is sleeping well at night, we take him out at midnight and stay outside the crate until he's settled (at first we had crate open and just comforting pup until settled so we have moved forward a bit in the last 10 days!) just watching them curled up asleep and thinking this is my chance to get a few things done - it really is like having a newborn again! ... but worse, as you can shove a nappy on them! Wink

That's true Dieu!

My boy was pretty good by 12 weeks and not had accident since 16 weeks

Think was about 12 /13 weeks before no midnight pee needed

GreyHare · 23/05/2016 11:20

My boy got it much faster than my girl but she wasn't reliable until she was 7 months old, but consistency is the key, and praising when they get it right and not making a fuss when they get it wrong.
