Patterdale Terrier Grooming

Hi All

I would love some advice about grooming my Patterdale; he is 8 and recently rescued, he is the most naturally gorgeous dog in the world.

So far we have been brushing him everyday (he loves) and I have trimmed a couple of clumps out of his hair where it was badly matted and couldn't be untangled; he gives himself a wash everyday. He was long hair on his head, face, ears and dense hair on his body with wiry leg hair.

So my question is what do you do with your similar dogs? Do I need to do anything more for him?

I have a Patterdale mix who left to his own devices has fairly thick 1.5-2" long wiry type hair , however because he likes swimming ,laying in puddles and rolling in stinky stuff I have him clipped every 5 weeks so he actually has a very short ,soft coat . He also goes to the groomers for a bath I between clips , so I generally only spot wash the worst bits when necessary .

FloralNomad thanks so much for your reply, I think that's what I will do with him. May I ask how you chose a groomer? There seems to be a lot of choice out there.

Fortunately my mum already had a groomer so I just went to them , word of mouth is best IMO so perhaps ask some people walking their dogs who they use .

Check his type of hair. If the same thickness all the way down , clipping is fine. If thick at the outside, fine and soft near the body, strip. It's the way that wire haireds protect themselves again the weather, and clipping will change the composition.

And just bath to remove fox poo etc.
