Pet Passport for Ireland?

We have been taking our dog to Ireland on the ferry from UK for some years without anyone asking to see a pet passport (we dont have one for him, although he is microchipped). Spoke to someone today who said that the Irish ferries are now asking for pet passports. Has anyone been over to Ireland recently?

As I understand it they can (& always have been able to) ask for a pet passport if you are travelling from the UK to the South but they're not needed at all if you're travelling to the North.

The best thing to do is contact the company you'll be travelling with to find out the current policy.

We last went 18 months ago, and the website said all dogs had to have passports, but we weren't asked, nor did we see any sort of facilities to check passports and chips (the 'dog reception' centre for the Euro Tunnel is huge and well sign posted)

From what I read on the forums at the time, it was just a 'catch all' wording of the act, rather than any desire to start checking dogs travelling between RoI and the UK. Certainly there is no way of policing the movement over the Irish/NI border, nor are there any requirements to check a dog travelling from NI to UK by ferry.
It seems very nonsensical that you can take a dog by ferry from the mainland to NI, and then drive it over the border without any need for a passport, but would need one for a ferry from UK to RoI!

Maybe one of the rescue organisations that brings a lot of dogs over from Ireland might be able to give more advice on what is happening at the moment?

The rules for rescue dogs are slightly different, because their movement is seen as a 'commercial transaction', they have to travel on DARD approved transport etc. and have to have al paperwork including a vet check 48 hours before departure.

In theory all dogs need a passport for Ireland because you are travelling outside the UK to another European country. In reality I have never heard of anyone travelling with their own dog to be stopped and checked.

As someone else said it is nonsensical, as you can travel into Northern Ireland with no checks at all, and drive an hour over the border in the Republic.. or vice versa..... and all the puppy farmers know this

Been reading into the threads regarding travelling with a pet from UK to Roi. I have been searching for a contact number to discuss taking my dog who will be 15 weeks on the day we travel but literally hours away from the 21st day of rabies vaccination...

I really don't think you would have an issue with that. One pup, travelling with a family in a car is honestly not what they are looking for at the ports :)
