How to go about finding a puppy with similar bloodlines to my old dog?

We lost our beloved Labrador last year, and I'm starting to think ( only thinking at the moment! ) about getting another dog. Our old dog had such a lovely nature and was so beautiful I would love to see if I could find a puppy that was from the same or similar " stock." I know that temperament isn't strictly genetic and that it is unlikely I would find relatives, but just out of interest I would like to look, however I don't know where to start. I have her KC certificate, and have tried googling her parents but had no luck. Does anyone know where I could try looking?

Could you get in touch with her breeder (presumably they're not still breeding?) and ask if they can point you to someone using the same lines?

Alternatively most breeds have an online pedigree database where you can look up individual dogs and move back or forward through their pedigrees. A quick google should bring up a lab specific one.

I can't contact her breeder unfortunately, we got her as a 3 year old from a friend of a friend. The guy who bred her gave her to him as she was supposed to be a gun dog but she didn't like it so he just wanted rid of her :( I will check the databases though, thanks.

What are the affixes on the pedigrees?

Sire is Countryways Chestnut, Dam is Aftonvalley Vanilla. She was born in 2004. I'm guessing they're not particularly " famous " as tried googling them but no joy.

A quick google of Aftonvalley gives contact details for breeder.

Is there an affix further back that's one of the "good" bloodlines? Is there any FTCh or FTW in there?

Tbh even if you do get a similar bloodline you could get a dog at the total opposite end of the spectrum from your old dog. I have a mother and two of her pups (from the same litter) and they are all so different- especially the pups. One small leggy, fine boned and nervous and the other huge (37kg) muscular and over confident

Ah really, I look a bit thick now don't I?! Will have another look. It's just purely out of interest at the moment, when we do think about another I might actually go for something completely different so we don't end up comparing the two!

Can't see any of those on the actual certificate, but it's only got the two parents on, not the full pedigree.

Not at all. In our case girl pup takes characteristics from further back in the mums pedigree and boy pup is just like his dad.

Re the papers, that's unusual, not come across that before. Is it a breeders certificate of the KC one?

The dam's breeder is pretty easy to find, they have a champdogs page with contact details.

Her littermate had 3 litters that I can find, so there should potentially be relatives and if the dam's breeder also bred the litter yours was from they should know what the dam was like and what lines are likely to have similar traits.

The stud won't be the same as they tend to have a whole load of litters.

Ruby it's the Owner's Registration Certificate, so that's probably not really her papers as such is it? The guy I got her from ( not the breeder ) gave me it so I could register her in my name, but I never bothered as wasn't going to show or breed from her.

Just having a quick look and I've found the pedigrees of both her dam and sire:

Official pedigrees will have either three or five generations listed. Five seems to be the norm, at least amongst the breeders I know.

The Owner's Registration Certificate is different and only lists the dog's dam and sire.

It's the registration certificate which is the official (at least as far as KC stuff goes, it's not a legal proof of ownership) document, not the pedigree. You need the registration certificate, and to be the registered owner, to be able to order a pedigree certificate.

We have just taken on a new lab pup. As she is to be a pet I wasn't really interested in her pedigree I didn't really pay much attention to it but it turns out she shares a number of common ancestors with our last lab (lost her a couple of years ago). Our new baby came from local family and both parents are locally bread from different lines so not really surprising she is related to the old one. She has a very similar temperament and is a lovely pup. Her Great grandmother on her fathers side was Countryways Lady Connie so probably related.
The K9 web site is also useful to look for siblings of your late dog. You can look for a breeding line and possible breeder.
