Any vets around? Or vet's nurses?

We had our dog neutered today - 9:00 this morning - and when we collected him they told me he wouldn't need any pain relief until tomorrow as he had injections at the time of the op. He's been ok but about an hour ago has started trying to lick and bite to wound. We have put the big collar on him but he gets stressed about having it on so we've just been stopping him whenever her starts.

What I'm worried about is that he's in pain. Although they said he'd had enough pain relief, that was this morning and it must be hurting by now? If it was a human I'm sure you'd take pain relief this long after but they expressly told me not to give him any. He's panting quite a lot and seems quite uncomfortable. Does anyone know whether I'm safe to give him anything tonight?

Do not under any circumstances give him human meds. He's most likely had an NSAID like loxicom/metacam. The injection should last 24 hours. The only thing that would be safe to give him on top of that is an opiod based drug like buprenorphine but this is only available from your vet. He might just be uncomfortable rather than in pain. The stitches can feel odd and can cause distress. If you genuinely think he's in pain the only option would be your emergency vet.
Sympathies though, it's not nice to see them like this.

Thank you, it would have been Metacam if I was going to give him anything but I'm not going to give him anything now. I'm just going to keep my eye on him and use the cone if he won't stop. He seems calmer now so hopefully he'll relax a bit. He had a retained testicle so he had two incisions so it's a bit more painful for him, hopefully once he gets the pain relief in the morning he'll be better. Thanks again.

If he is really upset by the collar a pair of pants or boxers on him is often to,estate much better and will stop him getting to the stitches.
