When do puppies sleep through?

My friend has a puppy who's 1 at the end of this month and still wakes her up at 3am every day. Shouldn't he be sleeping through by now? Shock

She needs to ignore it. Dogs get into a routine. By now all dogs would normally be able to go through the night.

Thanks, I'll pass that on. Grin

It's all about routine.

My puppy is 10 weeks old and has been with us for 7 days. She's in a crate at night. She woke at 3am and then each hour on the first night - we went to her every time. Second night she slept through to 6am and since then we don't hear a peep from her at night. However at 1 year old your friends dog is too old to start crate training.

1 year old isn't too old for crate training! Why would it be? I trained day dog at 14months, not too old at all.

You can crate train at any age but that's got nothing to do with whether dogs sleep all night ,my dog doesn't have a crate and he slept through from a very early age .

My dog slept through from his second night with us a day or two less than 8 weeks old. First night he did a bit of crying for half an hour, then a couple of whimpers an hour or so later. Since then, any noise from him at night is either snoring or a warning sign of diarrhoea/vomiting.

I'm afraid I was a bit heartless with him. On breeders advice he slept in a crate and the rule from day 1 was that only silent dogs get let out. So when he whimpered I checked on him, spoke quietly to him and left the room. He decided that it was less hassle to just sleep.

At 1 year crate training would still be doable, but getting him to settle may take longer as he's now got into bad habits. But if your friend is consistent, patient and strict about the new routine he should settle down fairly quickly.

Thanks so much everyone, I'll pass on your advice. Smile
