Wtf is with this jumping up?!

My 3-year-old lurcher is driving me mental with the jumping. (Rescue, had her nearly 12 months.)

I have visitors to the front door and I practically have to sit on her to restrain her.

She jumps constantly. On everyone. At the slightest provocation. Very HIGH.

She's 100% friendly, she just wants attention, but I'm so sick of it.

Should I try clicker training? Anyone? Any advice much appreciated. I'd love to come up with one method that would work if stuck to it religiously.

I taught my dog the command 'back up' I use this when the doorbell goes.

The doorbell rings and I say 'back up' and he jumps on the sofa. I ten tell him to stay ( he doesn't stay for that long as that part we are still working on.

I added this into his daily training routine that I go through.

It took months to work. And the first time he did it without me telling him I nearly screamed the house down with excitement. But it did work. Maybe try something like that ?

Or I would put a dog behind a gate till people have come in. Only when the dog has calmed down are they allowed out and no attention until she has four feet on the floor.

So what do you do if she doesn't physically back up, though (mine never will). Do you have her on a restraint?

You need to stop her practising the behaviour so keep her behind a stair gate when visitors arrive and keep her on a light house line so that you can keep control of her if you need to

You also need to make it worth her while to keep all paws on the floor so reward her when she's doing things you like and ignore things you don't

No stair gate as no stairs (bungalow!). If j keep her behind the glass door leading to the outside pateo, she gets up on her hind legs and manically scratches the glass.

I do put her on a lead and harness to go and greet visitors at the door, but she can quite easily rear up or leap as she is large (30+ kilos and can jump 6 feet high!). I suppose I feel like I'm bending down restraint her the whole time and as soon as I let go, she's in their faces.

Does she have a crate? You need to stop battling her and make it worth her while to stay on the floor

So you could have doorbell rings = tasty Kong or handful of kibble scattered on the floor - and you don't need stairs for a stair gate - we have one across the kitchen door - it's very rarely shit now but can be useful if there's a delivery driver who's scared of dogs

No, no crate - I can't imagine her taking to one, tbh.

Maybe I need to be throwing kibble on the floor as we approach the door? I think you are right that she needs to be distracted by a 'reward' then makes it appealing to keep paws on floor.

Have you tried clicker training? Lots of videos on YouTube for this. Our dog used to jump up when we got her but soon learned she was completely ignored until she sits down. Then she gets a nice quiet fuss. It also can help to get them to do a behaviour you want rather than just saying no, so put her in a sit and reward calmly for that. Videos show it much better than I can describe!

Oh, the concept of clicker training is familiar! Haven't tried it thought - thanks for reminding! I might buy a clicker, I think....

If you look on YouTube there are loads of videos to help. My dog was 14 months when we got her so hadn't practised it as much but she soon realised what was expected and it stopped pretty quickly when she realised she should sit instead.

Have you tried your training something incompatible with jumping up? For example if you can train her to sit when the doorbell goes or when people come in then she can't be jumping up at the same time. You need to train it and train it and train it until it's bullet proof and really reward her when she does it.
