What are you currently teaching your dog.

My one year old springer is currently learning to:

Twirl. I have been working on this for weeks. And he still hasn't got it. anyone else's one this one ?

Close. Where ever he is , I have been teaching him to come close and Come right by my right leg. This one is going better. Only tried it inside.

What are you currently working on.

He already knows :
Sit
Down
Belly rub
To touch both of my hands ( easiest one to teach. He got this within a few minutes.
Back up....( this I taught him to jump on the sofa when the door bell rings and stay there.
Watch me
Sit stay and down from a distance ( though he struggles with this sometimes.

I like idea threads like this as they give me ideas of what to work on next.

He did for a few months know the name of about 5 toys...but he didn't generalise them and then destroyed them and I couldn't be bothered giving ever toy he got a name, lol

Ddog was rehearsing for a role in a musical, but I decided to pull her out. The children involved were really not dog savvy and Ddog was getting stressed. She was learning to bow for that so maybe I'll carry on with that for a while.

She knows:

Our boy knew a ridiculous amount, he did obedience, agility, rally obedience and heelwork to music. He also knew twist (clockwise) and turn (anticlockwise).

Where are you having trouble? Are you using a clicker?

Whistle sit - this is a work in progress... (And has been for some time ..sigh)

He's got the sit bit - as soon as he hears one long peep his bottom hits the floor - as long as he's within 3 feet of me, any further away and he seems to feel the need to get closer ..,

Whistle 'stop' for the collie, she can stop on command but I want her to stop to the whistle now as the sound carries further.

I am trying to teach the spaniel to not be quite so clingy, he was a rescue and had been a stray when he came to us he was very aloof. At first he couldn't give two hoots about humans and ignored us completely but now I cannot move without my cling-on attached to my side. The collie has taught him to play and to be a dog, we have taught him the basics and now I want him to be happy on his own for a few minutes while I nip to the loo or whatever.

Let there be cupcakes.... I don't use a clicker. I have carpel tunnel in both hands and every time I tried I couldn't get my hands to work with the clicker and food. So I gave up.

He really can't get the twisting round. He does it when I rotate the food around his head with no problem. But take the food away and he just stares at me. He knows all the other commands with either a hand signal or a word. But he can't seem to get this.

It's not really important. I can pick something else. It's just frustrating.

Though today when there was another dog around I got four ' watch me' commands. He is awful around other dogs so I was really pleased. Didn't do it again though lol.

I would be happy for my dog to walk past people or dogs without leaping 6 foot in the air while barking, lunging and trying to eat whatever is offending her Blush
I'm not sure how something so simple can become so difficult...

Sadly its harder than it looks and training is not going that well!!

springer are you giving him the treat that he's following around, or a different treat from the other hand?

The tricky thing with a twist is that you usually reward them when they finish the twist and are standing still. Many dogs don't realise that they got the treat for twisting. Try dropping the treat at various point during the twist - sometimes at the end of 1 twist, sometimes after 2, sometimes after just a half or three quarters.

Eric's learning "Get out of my sight!" Grin which basically means go in the other room. It's surprisingly useful when I'm trying to get stuff done or I'm trying to sort out more of his mischief. I'm actually surprised he's agreeing to do this one as he always has to be in the midst of everything tbh.

Greyhorses I know exactly what u mean. I never come across any other dogs that are like mine. They all seem perfectly okay seeing other dogs.

You could have knocked me down this morning when he ignored the other dog and watched me. Didn't do it again though so my happiness was short lived. I wish I had someone round here that had a dog like that so we could work together.

And we're currently doing don't run out the front door when it's open which we have got when there's not an actual person at the door.
He's only 5 months old and the breeds that go into his muttleyness are not know for being bright so I'm pleased. I do need to do leave it though as he's half got it from me going ah ha but that failed when he found a shitty baby wipe in a field yesterday!Hmm

Not to chase joggers or cyclists. When you have a dog who is not interested in treats (regardless of what they are) and for whom toys are only interesting so long as there isn't a jogger or a cyclist in sight, it's proving a challenge.

Any ideas?? At the moment he's permanently on a long line.

can walk a short way on her hind leg, but I never taught that it's just something she does
likewise with twirling on hind legs
down - but only with a treat in front of her nose

with me - walking by my side
which cup is the treat under - usually use 5 little cups for that

that's enough, - to stop her barking
go pee - just before I go out or before bed, she will be pee on command, which is a handy one.
up - jump up onto something
drop - only works sometimes depending on what's in her month at the time, if it's a stone she'll drop it, if it's some dead thing she's dug up, not so much.

We're currently working on 'where's the ball', she had to touch the ball with her paw when asked, that's going quite well.

I've given up trying to teach her to roll over.

life recall off a distraction is pretty much the hardest thing ever. There's a book by Victoria Schade called "how to bond with your dog" and she uses lots of different methods to teach recall. Might be worth getting hold of a copy. I'm pretty sure there's a big section on recall in The Culture Clash too. I'll dig my copy out when I get home and check for you.

We did changing direction at training class last night. Our trainer's not brilliant so I need to have a think and work it out a bit. Think it'll be a fun one to work on.

Also realised that ddog's retrieve is a bit rusty so need to work on that!

Raffles recall is good ( not used that often as he is not allowed off the lead due to his reactive nature.

But one of the best things I taught him for recall ( sort off) was the command ' your going the wrong way'

He knows this means turn around and come whatever way I am going. When I call that he spins round and comes back towards me... He knows he doesn't have to come back to my side so I think that helps a lot. He just spins round and comes back in the direction I am going.

Normally when I call this I tend to walk in a completely different direction so he has to follow me.

I tend to use the comman ' food' for calling him back to me. So he knows it's a good thing.
