My dogs killed a cat :(

I have come home to find my two small poodle cross breed dogs have just torn a small cat apart in our (walled) back garden . I feel sick , they normally take a beating from rowling Tom's whose path them cross on walks on lead.

There is no collar on the poor thing and though we have many strays in the area it looks fancy . Do I have to go door knocking round the neighbourhood ?
Am I liable for anything ?

if they knew he ate cats, and moved into a street where there is a cat in almost every house, that would make them antisocial arseholes, IMO

Hennifer - applying this principle to yourself, before you decide to get another cat, will you be checking with your neighbours, to ensure that they don't have small furries that your cat may terrorise when you allow it to roam freely? Ot is it OK for your cat to go into other peoples gardens and terrorise small furries, but not OK for your cat to be at risk there happens to be a dog there?

On a slightly different note (and I accept that the urban legends could be just that), please don't leave your dogs unattended in a garden because they might get stolen.

I have a back garden surrounded by 4 metre wall, built in no small part to keep foxes and cats out.

insan1tyscartching · 27/02/2016 17:48

Hennifer with dogs though it's a bit difficult to tell whether they are cat aggressive until it happens. My own dog isn't bothered by my friends' cats,I have photos of them sharing beds quite happily, he also passes them in the street without a second glance but he will not tolerate one in his garden and I am not putting him on a lead or keeping him out of our garden just in case a cat decides to take its' chances. IME though cats pretty quickly suss where they wouldn't be safe so there is a cat that sits on my neighbour's garden (not hers) but it never ventures over the fence onto ours.

habibihabibi · 27/02/2016 18:01

Now I don't want to excuse my dogs at all. I am livid that they got off their silk cushions and destroyed the cat but here is what my sisters cat did this week. They are both predators .

Eeek!

Sparklingbrook · 27/02/2016 18:07

What did they say at the vets habib? Was the cat chipped? Did you manage to contact the owner?

ilovesprouts · 27/02/2016 18:12

I have a dog and a cat you can't keep cats in mine goes out all the time I have a six foot fence so they is just enough room for the cat to get under the gate no other dogs can get in.

Waxlyrically · 27/02/2016 18:30

As an animal lover this is so sad for everyone concerned. I don't really understand why threads like this often end up as cats v dogs - there don't seem to be any rights and wrongs in such a horrible situation. Clearly you can't stop all cats roaming and it isn't reasonable to say dogs can't enjoy running free in their own garden but as others have said if you have high fences ensuring there is an escape route for a cat or other wildlife seems about the best that can be achieved.

Greyhorses · 27/02/2016 18:30

I think it's the risk you take when you let your cat out. Mine go out and if something happened I wouldn't blame anyone unless it was untentional.

I also wouldn't keep my dogs in just incase a cat wandered onto the property Hmm

Greyhorses · 27/02/2016 18:31

Intentional not untentional...

Sparklingbrook · 27/02/2016 18:32

I think on balance being killed by dogs is fairly low on the list of things you think will happen to your cat when they roam. But anything is possible.

HSMMaCM · 27/02/2016 18:49

Our cat was mauled by the next door neighbours dog. The cat had to be put down. Very sad, but part of nature and we didn't blame the neighbours. They did blame themselves.

Really? I don't have cats (I'm not terribly fond of them) but if I did/were, I'd worry quite a bit about just this. And getting hit by cars, and eating something poisonous, and how neighbours might retaliate for the cat poo in their gardens, etc.

Sparklingbrook · 27/02/2016 19:19

I am a cat owner and no I don't worry about her getting killed by dogs Apple. Really.

Peaceandloveeveryone · 27/02/2016 19:21

No I don't either, cars is my biggest worry. I lost one to a car and I think that's the biggest killer of cats.

Sparklingbrook · 27/02/2016 19:25

Yes, it's cars for me too Peace. I live in a very quiet neighbourhood but you never know.
My neighbours are very reasonable types thankfully, and many are also cat owners.

Switchitup · 27/02/2016 19:29

Cars for me as well. My cats won't go near a garden with people or dogs in.

DaggerEyes · 27/02/2016 19:29

If I ever get another dog, ability to keep cats off my property would be one of the criteria. Cats are vermin. I feel no sadness for the owners of cats who roam and come to a bad end, how dare they send their pets off into other people's gardens and try to dictate the terms of the unwelcome visit!?!

Sparklingbrook · 27/02/2016 19:31

You do know you can't 'send' a cat to someone's garden don't you?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/02/2016 19:31

Is that a serious post Dagger?

Switchitup · 27/02/2016 19:32

What a heartless post dagger. God forbid your dog should ever slip the lead and go for a roam and get attacked or run over.

I hope you never have a dog somebody so cold doesn't deserve the love of an animal.

Sparklingbrook · 27/02/2016 19:34

I don't think you can turn up at the dog rescue and ask for a dog that chases cats specifically.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/02/2016 19:38

I don't quite know why someone would class cats as vermin, but not dogs tbh.

Alisvolatpropiis · 27/02/2016 19:47

Because that's the law Through. Cats are vermin in the eyes of the law.

Op that's an awful thing to have happened, for you and for the owner (who I hope can be tracked down).

My next door neighbours have two cats, I have two dogs. The dogs will chase the cats but have never come close to catching either. If they killed one of the cats I think I'd consider moving house 😳
