Advice on dog being sick

I have a miniature Daschund who started being sick Friday, she has got worse overnight and is now drinking lots but immediately sicking it up. She is not eating, vets don't open till 10.30, hopefully we will be able to get an appointment. Any advice until then please.

Call your vet now and hopefully one of the ermegency vets can book you in for when opens

Yes agree with PP. if she's not keeping water down she needs to be seen asap.

Don't offer her a bowl of water which she'll vomit. Just leave a tiny amount in the bottom of the bowl and if she manages to keep that 'sip' down for 10-15 minutes, offer her another.

Also is she a chewy dog? Have a think about anything she could have scavenged, toys she could have swallowed etc

She's not a chewy dog but a poo eater if we're not super quick. She is sleeping now, won't offer too much water as she will just sick it up. Our vets opens in just over an hour so am going to take her straight down. The emergency vets is some distance so won't make a lot of difference time wise.

I imagine they'll likely keep her in hospital on iv fluids. They'll probably want to x ray her and run bloods.

Yes, she is defiinatly dehydrated, we are offering her sips of water every 10mins which she is keeping down. Our vets shut at 4.30 hopefully she may be well enough to come home for the night and it's just a bad sickness bug. Fingers crossed.

Milo was admitted straight away and put on a drip and heat blanket, she had begun to poop lots of blood and is very unwell. I have to collect her at 4 and transport with drip attached to the overnight vet for emergency care and then collect her at 8am and take her back to normal vet. I am really worried about the drip coming out on the journey. The vet is going to do bloods and x Rays, he think maybe Pancreatis but not sure.

Hope she gets well soon , for the future I'd look into changing vets as this seems a very unsatisfactory arrangement -if the patient needs transferring surely they should deal with it and just bill you .

That's what I thought but all the vets in this area use this one emergency vet. I have got a crate in the car and am hoping that I can attach the drip to it. It's about a 15/20 min drive, then have to repeat it at 8am in morning and then each day until she is well enough to be discharged. Shouldn't complain at least she's being cared for.

I'm with Floral, I'd also be looking into what emergency care arrangements other vets have. Moving dogs ill enough to have been admitted twice a day between different vets is madness.

Our vets don't do out of hours appointments/admissions (they use the Vets Now service, it's our only gripe with them) but animals that have been admitted stay at their own hospital. They have nurses working all night and vets on call in case they're needed.

Poor dog. Hopefully if needs to transfer to emergency vet then can stay there until better. One of ours was going to be transferred FROM emergency care to our normal vet one Monday morning. We said we wanted him to stay put, and that there would be no question of us transferring from our normal vet to the emergency one. Would they not just keep the canula in and attach to drip at emergency vet? Good luck, but at least she's in the right place now.

The drip will the disconnected and the catheter will be covered with a bandage. There will be no problem. You will either bring the fluid bag and drip line with you, or the overnight vet will start fresh fluids when you get there. Don't worry about that at all.
The overnight service is a good idea - the staff are actively monitoring your animal. I personally wouldn't mind driving my dog 15-20 min; I'd rather that than have her in the back of someone else's van that she doesn't know - and I'd expect she won't be staying too many overnights anyway.

I hope Milo gets better soon - if it helps I had to drive my dog from our normal vets to the emergency veterinary hospital on Friday night - he'd had a drip up at our vet but they disconnected it and covered it with a bandage - as soon as we got to hospital they took him off and reattached a drip. It was fine - and he was too woozy to bother about the bandage so left it completely alone

Milo was put to sleep a short while ago, she was too sick to save. Heartbroken.
