Overweight dog

We have a Cavachon, Cavalier/Bichon cross. We keep being told he is heavy and he shouldn't put on any more weight. He gets a small tub of wet food in the morning and three quarters of a cup of dry food in the afternoon. He is not a greedy dog, he doesn't look for food and he doesn't beg. He weighs about two stone. How can we reduce his weight. We take him to the beach a couple of times a week where he runs free and he gets a long walk in the evening and a shorter walk in the morning.

Weight loss should be slow but steady.

Mine got weighed once a month by the nurse at the vets.

She went on "light food" and once she reached her target has gone on to maintenance.

Over winter we had to reduce her food slightly as walks were not as long, but now the better weather and lighter nights are here we will be doing our three miles a day again so we may have to up her food a bit.

I weigh out about a weeks worth of food at a time using proper scales rather than a measuring cup. She gets 1 1/4 oz twice a day. She weighs around 6.4kg which is ideal for her. She was 8.8kg and she had no motivation for anything and often left her food as she was over fed.
