Hello lovely people
I am working on research about dogs breeds, genes and infectious diseases.
Can by any chance send me few hairs from their dog plus the name of the breed please?
Really appreciated. Thanks

Are you part of any if the big genetic research projects that have taken cheek swabs from thousands of dogs?
You need to remind people to take sample with clean hands into brand new plastic bag and ensure they have the hair bulb ( so plucked hairs not cut) to make sure you get your DNA.

BlackEyedPeas · 14/02/2016 21:04

Yes, the hair root contains keratinocytes, which are ideal for the extraction of nuclear DNA. This does not mean that cut or naturally shed hairs are entirely unsuitable for hair analysis of nuclear DNA but in a tiny number of analyses using cut or shed hairs, scientists are in fact able to extract nuclear DNA.
If it was about cut hair, I would have checked first with the dog grooming places Wink

With A bit more info of what you want I would be happy to help if I can and can get you some samples from my dog and a few family members pets.
It depends where you are and do the hairs need to be from a pure breed or would you accept cross breeds aswell.
I have a chihuahua cross jrt, my father has a Japanese Akita and whippets, my sister has a two pugs cross chihuahuas.
Just need more info on exactly what you need/ want.

I am very interested in this.
My dogs are all mongrels - is the breed part important?

Why so secretive?

TooMuchRain My thoughts exactly.

Lonecatwithkitten · 15/02/2016 12:27

Toomuchrain my thoughts exactly if you are part of one of the main teams say so. Though they tend to recruit through vets for specific disease programs AHT are currently recruiting at the moment.
