cocker spaniels

Hi

Just wanting some advice.

When we were first married we had a lovely blue roan Cocker spaniel. She was amazing. Me and dh worked opposite shifts so had plenty of time to walk her. One in the morning, one in the afternoon.

She was amazing when dd was born and they grew to be best friends.

Unfortunately she passed away several years ago. We haven't replaced her as our jobs changed and we didn't have time to care for another dog.

We now work for ourselves from home and have decided to get another cocker spaniel. The breeder we got our first dog from no longer operates, so we ant go back there.

Our kids are 5 and 11 and have been great with mums puppy so I know they won't terrorise a pup.

Please can someone advise me of any good breeders in the Yorkshire area?

Have a browse of cockersonline. It's a forum full of cocker owners and is fab.

What about a rescue spaniel? Try spaniel aid uk.

We tried a spaniel rescue last year and they weren't keen on us having kids.

Not sure if it's the same one. Will take a look at both suggestions. Thank you

Second cockersonline , also kennel club find a breeder . There are a a lot of inherited conditions in cockers so it's good to do a fair amount of your own research as well .There is lots of advice on cockersonline both on site and on the forum about what to ask and what tests to ask for etc .

We have a 7 year old , much adored tricolour show cocker .can't imagine what we talked about before him 😀😀, our children were 15, 12 and 8 when we got him .

hilda yes the Inherited conditions do bother us.

I am gutted the old breeder has stopped as I knew lots of people in the local area and all the dogs were great.

The Yorkshire Cocker Spaniel Club should be able to point you towards decent breeders.

I'd give the secretary of the Yorkshire Cocker Spaniel Club a call to see if they know of any upcoming litters in the area. They should also be able to help you with deciphering health testing requirements.

If you'd be happy to travel as far as Northamptonshire I can make a personal recommendation. :)

If you had any KC paperwork for your lovely roan girl it's possible you might be able to track down a dog from similar lines?

If you fancy doing this Katenka it's much easier than it might seem. Most breeds have a pedigree database website you can use, this appears to be the relevant one for cockers.

I did similar looking for breeders using lines similar to those of a Border Terrier my grandparents had who was whelped in 1982 and I did indeed find some of his relatives, one of which was the absolute spitting image of him. It was lovely Grin

If you have her KC registered name I'd be happy to do some trawling for you, I love searching through pedigrees even when they're not my breed Blush

toboldlygo I never thought of that! That's brilliant. We do have them somewhere. We are actually in the middle of renovating, but when we are finished I bet we can find them.

One of the reasons we are renovating is so we can have a dog. We live in a house where the kitchen is on a different floor to the living room. It's a pain when mum brings her dog. So our daytime rooms will be all on one floor.

Trionic I think dh knows it off the top of his head. To me she was just my sweep.

God I miss her. Just looking at photos of her sat next to my dds Moses basket. While I was pregnant she never left my side. When dd was born she never left her side. I am sure she knew that dd was growing inside me.

Sorry....rambling a bit. Can't believe how much I miss though

Cockers aren't my usual breed but I handle one in the show ring for a family member and have ended up with an otherwise useless knowledge of cocker pedigrees. Would be happy to put it to use for you! Grin

I am sure she knew too - they are the kindest, most generous little dogs and love their humans an impossible amount.

I find myself in a similar position to Katenka, so slightly highjacking only to ask if anyone has a personal recommendation in the Home Counties/Essex region.

There's been a cocker spaniel shaped hole in my heart for 8 years that needs filling.

I've had both my cocker spaniel from Anahi in Co Durham and I know others who have had pups from Dreamist in Co Durham too.
Cocker are the best X
