What is it with pugs?

I mean, I'm not a particular fan of Labradors (more a hairy-mutt-dog sort of person myself), but I can see why they're so popular. But I just don't get pugs - why are they such a thing right now???

I didn't know they were and I'm not a dog person at all but I think pugs are really sweet. I feel sorry for them when they can't breathe though.

They have so much personality.

I love my pug.

Pippa - the teens round here all have things with pictures of pugs on them - and a pug puppy is the ultimate object of desire.

Now personality I can understand - but the pictures???

My 4 year old tried to steal borrow someone's pug from the park yesterday. She adores them and I get bugged about them regularly.

I'd love one but they're so expensive! Plus they have breathing problems don't they?

My friend has one and it's her favourite of all her dogs. Says she has an ace personality. Maybe it does but I'm not keen. It snorts, snores, snuffles and gasps all the time, slobbers and sheds hair like you wouldn't believe.

I was at a country show recently and they had a pug parade and there were like 80 pugs in tutus! Dd loved it, I thought it was terrible. Poor dogs.

Aren't they like a genetic abomination or something?

Still I've never met a bad tempered one and they have perky personalities.

I have a Pug. He's nearly 11 and we flew him back from the USA with us when we moved back! He is exceptionally healthy and although he snores like a pig I love him. He's quite lazy now and does a good impression of a sofa cushion most of the time.
His pet hates are household cleaning tools- Hoover, mop, duster, brush- all must be viciously attacked on sight!
He's not keen on hair driers either!
He really does have a proper personality! Lots of attitude and thinks he's bigger than he is!

They are cute in a cartoony kind of way, but the health issues the breed endures for that cuteness is cruel.

I like the pug personality, don't like the body and couldn't have a dog that couldn't breathe or do be a proper dog...I think it's really sad

I have a friend who rescued 2 pugs. He luffs them to bits. He now encourages anyone looking for a dog to contact breed rescues.

How could you not love this?

Tbh I'm more of a cat person than a dog person, pugs are a bit like cats. They want to sit as close as possible to you at all times. But they do snore something rotten and shed a lot!

They're the new owl.

They're characterful little souls but so overbred. It's probably a little cruel tbh. Not so much owning and loving one but the deliberate breeding of them.

Pugs all the way here, though when I take him to work and we have a school in he is rather distracting to the kids......

Really want another but need to wait till Dave's a little older.

Yes they do shed, yes he snores but he knows when your upset and gives the best cuddles

I love mine to bits. Everyone in the neighbourhood knows him and loves him, he's a bit of a clown but also super affectionate, and he does give the best cuddles.

They have such great personalities, but unfortuately the health problems that come with them would always put me off, hearing a dog panting, snoring and struggling to breath after exercise is not for me :(

I have a pug and yes he grunts and wheezes and snores, but I honestly don't think it restricts him. I have two other non-pug dogs and he runs around with the best of them. Always happy to go on long country walks and keeps going until the very end, in fact he has energy to spare.

I think a lot of the wheezing is because they tend to be a bit snuffly. He does a great line on sneezing in your face at the most unexpected times.

Oh yes, the full pug-sneeze all over you . My pug walks for two hours a day and the only restriction he feels is is short legs when he's chasing a whippet!

It must be said, both my dog and my cat (neither any sort of breed) can snore quite impressively

I think whoever said upthread that they're the new owl is spot on - hopefully it is just pictures (not that there's anything wrong with dog people having pugs, of course - its just that thing when a breed becomes 'fashionable')

They are that kind of ugly-cute that some people like and others don't.

I think they are ugly. I can sort of see why others think they are cute, but it is not for me.

OK how come we have got to 22 posts before someone mentioned the FARTING, oh yes Pugs FART, Arnie and Wilma my 2 seem to have competitions as to who does the loudest and smelliest.

And yes the snoring is awful with two of them (3 if you count DH)

I have a gorgeous rescue pug. He snuffles and snorts bit he is perfectly healthy and has walked as far as 16 miles in a day.
He is a funny little thing - loves people and just wants to be near you all the time.
He has almost cured my son's anxiety and depression and to see them play together is amazing.
We get stopped all the time walking him by people who love them. I wanted one when I was a kid as I thought they were a goth's fog!
