My 4 month old never liked sleeping any of them but there was nothing I could do about it . Im honestly reading this as, "it's is too much work with a baby"

Come to think of it one of the only things DC#4 did like at arpind 3/ 4 months was the dogs spotty black nose

Yes they've probably realised a collie/springer puppy wasnt the best idea whilst you have a friggin newborn! Baffles me why they even thought it a good idea in the first place! That is a crazy breed mix for starters.

Well exactly! It does make you wonder, sleep depravation made them think it was a good idea maybe? It would be like if you had twins though, it would be almost guaranteed they'd never actually wake at the same time during the night so you'd be up sorting one need or the other more than you'd actually be sleeping. I thought I was mad taking on an adult dog with a 5 month old & 3 older children even considered both but decided 2 13st monsters & a baby that's about to become mobile really would be too much it's been ok but I couldn't have coped with a puppy! I can only deal with a certain amount of bodily fluids per day.

I see your piss & raise you shit! Not this time but with DC 2. We moved in with FIL for a bit after MIL passed away. Her St died just before she did & the 2 remaining dogs went all funny for a bit...including overnight accidents. Not an experience I EVER wish to repeat, H & FIL roaring with laughter at me stading on 1 leg holding the baby didn't help.

So depressing. I just saw a post from Dogs Trust UK (also on FB) saying they've been absolutely inundated with unwanted dogs this year because gumtree and FB make it even easier for people to buy without really considering the long term. So sad for the dogs (and cats) that gave been bought on a whim because they were cute and then aren't wanted once it becomes clear how much work is involved.

Well it's only a dog isn't it. If you don't like it after a while you can always chuck it away.

Bit like those shoes you loved online but when you get them the heels are too high and they pinch your toes.

Only difference is you can't shove the dog to the back of the wardrobe and forget about it. Although for some people dumping the poor bloody thing on the street is the next best thing.

There needs to be more control over breeding and buying dogs. When you buy a television the shop has to notify the TV licencing authority. Perhaps we need a similar scheme for dog purchase with all breeders needing a licence.

Somehow think it's never going to happen though, so this sort of thing will just get worse.

Pigs They still operate dog licensing on the Isle of Man (or they did in the late 90's early 00's when my mum lived over there). I don't think it cost that much but my Mum said it really did encourage responsible ownership.

I think there's a 'got to have it now' culture too, people aren't willing to wait for things. My dog greatly misses canine company as I said in a pp I had the option to take on her sister too but for the reason I put there & others it simply wasn't practical. Her breeder/owner understood this even though she'd have preferred them both to come to me. We've had her for 3 months now & have realised that we probably will get a 2nd dog her original owner agrees & has told me not to feel guilty about not having them both but I do, while we'd love to be able to get 1 now all the reasons for not getting her sister are currently still there. They will be being sorted over the next 3-6 months so we're planning on looking in the Autumn. While we could technically afford a 2nd without saving we're choosing to put money aside each week. It's how we were both brought up that if that if you really 'want' something it's worth saving for & we want our DCs to see & understand this (we haven't specifically said what the money is for just that we're saving for something).

Many years ago Bernard dog owners here needed a licence but it was so cheap that it became more expensive to administer it than the amount it collected. Also given that it never seemed to be enforced eventually it was deemed unworkable and scrapped.

There needs to be much more legislation around the breeding of dogs and a proper licence, the payment of which is enforceable by law.

Not going to happen though.

At least the people on the OP's f/b had looked after the dog. So that's something in their favour.

We got our puppy when DS was 6months old (really not sure what possessed us!) and DD is exactly a year younger than the dog.

There was one memorable night when DD was a month or so old... DS had terrible windy stomach cramps and had been up screaming. I'd eventually calmed him down, but he would only stay asleep if I was holding his hand. DD wanted breastfeeding constantly so we ended up in a sleeping bag on the floor next to DSs cot. Just got both children to sleep when DDog woke up and puked everywhere. I grabbed him and put him in the bath where he continued to puke as I cleaned the carpet (also right by DSs cot) all the commotion woke both children up again. That was not a good night!

Someone in a breed rescue group I belong too has published an advert some one posted on Preloved for a 2 year old Golden Retriever who they need to get rid of because " it's too hairy"!!!!!
Seriously? Who would have thought a Golden Retriever could be hairy?

My son isn't too keen on dpup at the moment and for a large part of the time I agree with him but it's something we will be working on not just dumping him ( dpup, not DS)

True Pigs I, personally, feel local councils should licence ALL breeders regardless of the number of bitches owned (my local council it's 5+ not sure if this is the same everywhere). The KC also need to radically overhaul the Assured Breeder Scheme as it really means very little. I'm guessing it all comes down to cost!
