Keeping dog's teeth clean

My dog (cavalier aged 6) has very bad breath. She's going to the vets next week, I suspect she'll at least need them descaling if not an extraction.

Will that improve her breath? How can I keep them clean afterwards? She hates having them cleaned, , but I will try to do them regularly. Are there any chews that are really good? I feed her James Wellbeloved dry food. She has quite a sensitive tummy and I suspect pedigree dentistix are full of rubbish plus she eats them in seconds so I can't imagine they are doing much good. I've bought nylon chews and raw hide but she doesn't chew them.

Also what can I expect if she needs a tooth extraction or descaling, how long will it take, what's recovery like, how much does it cost?

My vets charges depending on the size of dog and then different levels depending on how much they have to do, so 10kg dog needing major treatment is about £105.

It's a GA so I have dropped off first thing and then picked up late afternoon, I think they do the op late morning or earlier if not as busy. My lurcher had two teeth out last year and recovered really well. It had healed nicely at the post op check up.

I use plaque off, dentastix and some other little green pea type dog treat but don't think any are that effective. Also give my greyhound the fish4dogs fish skin treats.

Dentastix are a sure fire way of making a fat dog! My brother feeds them to his spaniel and now she's just overweight with bad teeth!
Chewing hard stuff cleans their teeth, bones, super baked bread and the like. My vet said he bakes bread and makes a bread roll for his dog that he bakes until it's rock hard, the dog loves them and it cleans his teeth as well

My first dog never had a single issue with his teeth so I was a bit blase with the second one (which we have now).

He had to have several extractions at the cost of around £300!

Learned our lesson.

Has his teeth cleaned with a finger sock every day now and seems to do the trick. They are under a tenner and last a couple of months.

Helpful do you use pet toothpaste? I'll have a look for a finger sock??

Eric has bones from the butcher every week. The vet said his teeth were in great shape at his last visit so they seem to be doing the trick and not only do they keep his teeth clean they keep him occupied which is a real bonus.

We put a little sprinkle of Plaque Off his food which softens the plaque though his saliva. The finger sick has silver in it (I think) so no toothpaste needed. We did try Turkey flavoured paste but he just wanted to eat it.

He had to have descaling and extractions under general anaesthetic which is a bit worrying. Not too much blood though. Was a bit groggy for a couple of days and had to have soft food for a couple of days as well.

They will sell them in the Vets or otherwise Pets Corner or Pets at home.

my lhaso apso just had to have 9 teeth out last week cost was 250
shes 5 and tried everything but nothing helped the vet said its just something that can affect small dogs, there was a jack russell in at the same time for the same thing
we've tried toothpaste, the plaque off, hard crunchy food from the vets but still her teeth arent the greatest
in comparison my other dog who is bigger has no problems with his teeth

her breath smells a lot better now 10 days after the teeth out

I've got plaque off but I don't think it has helped.

Logic Oral Hygiene Gel is brilliant stuff. Even if all you manage to do is smear it on their teeth/gums rather than properly brushing it still helps. I use the finger brush that comes with the Logic Gel and these days mine (except for the sensitive one who likes to play to delicate little flower card) line up when it get the paste out to have their teeth done
