9 month old puppy

Hallo.

I'm looking after a 9 month old daschund bitch whilst her owner is on holiday.

The owner warned me she likes to poop and pee on carpets. And yes, she certainly does! Even though she has plenty of access to outside - regular visits outside, good walk every day.

Why is she doing this? Because she can? Because she's young? Because it's nice and soft to go to the loo on the carpet?

Because they haven't house trained her properly

So what can I do?

How long have you got her for? She hasn't been house trained. Does she have a crate?

If my dog (nearly 9 month old) was still weeing and pooing in the house I wouldn't be leaving him in anybody else's house!

Can you restrict where she goes in the house? A room with a hard floor so accidents are easy to pick up. Kitchen?

I would also say restrict where the dog can go in house. If you have hard floors then that is where I would keep him.

I would think once the Dog owner is home then she needs to go back to the basics and start to house train the dog.

And how do you house train a dog? I've got her for five days.

My dogs (labs) just seemed to get it really quickly that you don't poop and pee in the house.

This dog just does it wherever there is carpet.

She is restricted to kitchen and sitting room - no carpets there - but sneaks in when I'm not looking. Sigh.

Some dogs are more difficult to train than others. Give it a go if you want but it is spectacularly unfair to leave you to deal with this problem!

Confine her in a small space or supervise constantly (you may need to out her in a leash to reliably keep her with you all the time). Take her out when waking up, after eating, after playing and at least once every hour. Stay with her outside.

If she likes carpets there may be something about the outside she does not like. I've seen dogs who did not like the cold or wet, and dogs that did not like hard surfaces likes concrete or stone. In very unlucky cases you can have a dog who does not like wet grass or hard surfaces (because the wee runs onto her feet).

It's also important to clean accidents very well. The new enzyme cleaners like Simple Solution are very effective.

Blimey, what a selfish owner! Prob not much you can do in five days, but as a guide my six month old pup is clean indoors (she has the odd accident but we were confident enough to take her away for a long holiday recently). Advice from Booboos spot on ...

It could also be that she was trained using puppy pads and now thinks every soft surface is a giant puppy pad.

As you only have her for a few days I'd just put a couple of pads in the rooms where you are letting her live and hope that she uses them . It's unbelievable that someone would ask someone else to look after their untrained dog in their house .

She's not pooping and peeing inside all the time. She's pooped twice and wee'd twice inside in 48 hours. So she does go outside.

Did they actually tell you this before you took her or did you find this out when she starting pissing and shitting in your house? I would be bloody livid!

Well I m not livid. It's all cleaned up easily.

They did mention she had performed in their home. But they were stuck and I offered to help.

She does need training from scratch again. I am getting her out, supervising her toilet but she doesn't seem keen on soggy garden!

I wouldn't have staff near a pair of shoes let along dc's. I had one from birth/old enough to leave its mother. He was just bonkers despite being really well looked after and loved.

Well if you don't mind strange dogs performing in your house then I don't think there's much more to say.

I didn't say I didn't mind. I said I wasn't livid about it. I would rather she didn't poop and pee inside and I would like to have helped sort her toileting out.

The dog then came into season - her first while she was here.

Anyway, she's gone home now. Sweet little thing.
