won't walk on lead

I have a 5m old border collie puppy,but he won't go for a walk on his lead he just refuses to move and sits on the floor any ideas he will fun freein the garden but he needs a walk to burn some energy off ..

i would put the lead on him in the house whilst in the same room as you when you sit down for a cuppa or something, he'll get bored of it, especially if you give him a toy to distract. leave it dangling i mean not held. then progress to holding it walking from one end of room to other, even just once with a tempting treat, you will soon have it cracked.

play a game with him and do his favourite things until he's given up noticing the lead and then progress from there

You can just hand a light weight from his collar when you are not there, and let him drag a lead around when you are.
He needs to wear it when he's having fun and his mind is elsewhere, for example at dinner time make him walk towards his food bowl wearing his lead.
Build up to making him walk from the end of the garden to hid food bowl.

Its really important you sort this out asap as he has already missed out on his important socialisation period. He's got some catching up to do.

What are you attaching the lead to?

Have you tried a harness?

He's got a collar and lead (puppy one ) he also gulps he food so got him one of them slow go bowls still eats fast.

Try a harness instead then as that won't give a sensation of pulling like a collar will.

Our's was like this when we got her - now 16 months. We just persisted. Whether she liked it or not, we 'walked' her every night without fail. Sometimes we'd get ten metres from the car and get a refusal.... sometimes straight away. but slowly, slowly, over weeks and weeks she'd go further. We'd pick her up, carry her for a few moments, then put her down and continue.... She is very nervous (rescue pup) and even now shy with other dogs and prefers to walk with a group of us, or two people rather than one ('pack' size makes her feel more secure?) But now she LOVES her walks and will walk for miles, every day. She has a harness and a halti style head collar as she is a puller.

It was just a case of continuing on with it, day in and day out. Some of her earlier walks were just 5 minutes. We slowly built it. We were firm but gentle - never negative or cross with her, however frustrating it was. Oh and a treat bag loaded with her fave treats - my son would walk a few steps ahead with the treat and that was very effective. A lot of stopping and starting at first but now she just walks like any other dog.
