limping dog

My dog has been limping quite badly after lying down. Then after a few minutes he is fine again. Until he lies down again. He is running and playing as normal. He's only 18 months old. I took him to the vet who couldn't find anything but didn't do an X-ray. I have decided to take him back for an X-ray. Any ideas what it could be? I'm very nervous

My dog does this but he is a lot older 8+ (rescue so not sure of his age). He's a staffie, he tends to lie or sleep in one position for too long and stiffens up. Then when he jumps off the sofa or bed he limps. That doesn't sound right for such a young dog. Has the vet given you any idea of ways to mange this in the meantime?

Sorry, meant to say that my vet has said its age related, possibly the start of arthritis. Oily fish once a week in his dinner was recommended, just getting the amount right, the first time he had it he ended up with the runs.

My dog is like that, she was diagnosed with bilateral cruciate rupture last week and is having an op in the new year. She also has elbow dysplasia in both front leg. She is a lab and is 3 next month.

It could be something or it could be nothing, I'd insist on xrays and make sure you've got pet insurance!

Thank you. Yes definitely something wrong as started out of the blue. Vet originally said just a slight muscle pull and gave him some anti inflammatories. They seemed to work for a week or so and then the limping came back. It is very strange because once "warmed up" he plays and jumps around as normal. But it is so bad when he first gets up that sometimes he stops trying to walk :-(

My dog limped on his front leg from rest and was then fine. He had elbow dysplasia and needed arthroscopic surgery to remove a bone fragment from the joint. Limping following rest was a classic symptom.

My dog dislocated his shoulder last year. Could it be something like that? Perhaps he jumped on it and you didn't notice and now it's painful? It was very easily remedied, the vet popped it back in. Extremely painful at the time though.

We noticed our 10 month old Lab bitch limping and dipping her head. Took her to the vet who suspected elbow dysplasia, recommended X rays to confirm diagnosis, and referred to specialist orthopod vet. He confirmed a bilateral abnormality in the coronoid process and referred us for a CT scan, then he operated to remove bone fragments, similar to spanielcrackers above. She is now completely recovered and should be no more vulnerable to arthritis than any other dog. It was eye-wateringly expensive though, and no insurance.

Just an update - he has a slight ligament tear. So could have been worse! Have to be very careful with him for a couple of months (no playing) but he should make a full recovery
