Coats for a springer

Does your springer have a coat for the winter? Does this help with reducing wet or mud?

He's a typical mud magnet, and will come back from even the most sedate walk as filthy as if he'd been rolling in a farmyard. I don't mind, but we're moving house and the new one isn't quite so conducive to mopping up as the current one.

Any recommendations?

Not a springer but my mud loving patterdale x wears an equafleece jumper , they cover the main parts and wash well .

Serious question. Do dogs need coats? Is that not the point of their own fur/ coat?

We had a springer who never had a coat though he did get very muddy! Some sort of lightweight coat may have saved my my mums carpets!

I do see lots of dogs in coasts these days and do wonder what is the point other than to look cute and possibly hot!

No, they don't need coats. But I was just hoping for a way to keep him cleaner sometimes!

We put a drying coat on Ddog (Toller) on the way home from walks where he's got very wet but there's no way I'd put a coat on him during walks - he'd melt! And I'd have thought springers would be similar?

My sil's springer has an all in one waterproof suit to keep him clean when she can't face a full wash twice a day.

Otherwise, I highly recommend the hoselock portable shower and a fleece coat - that way you can leave the shower out before you go for a walk, wash them off directly and then put the fleece on to dry them off.

Madeline - I have lurchers, and ddog1 is of the very thin coated and low body fat type. He needs a coat indoors from October onwards as he gets so cold and a waterproof anytime of the year as he is soaked to the skin immediatly

My dog only wears his coats / jumpers when the weather is bad / cold, on a day like today he just goes in his dog drying bag when we get home . He needs a coat in bad weather as I keep him clipped really short .

Madeline, my spaniel needs a coat, he's an underweight rescue who soaks up water like a sponge and he loves to swim, he has no meat on his bones at the moment to keep him warm when he gets wet.

I don't know where they are from but my springers have towelling robes. They go over the head and have a velcro belt. Great for absorbing most of the wet and dirt, once the walk is over. They dry off much quicker and they seem to quite like them.

My springer would lose his coat within about 20 seconds. I just hose him off and towel him dry. He has a towelling robe thing too which works well after a wet walk or after being hosed off.
My Shih Tzu cross wears a coat, I tried a waterproof one but it didnt really keep him dry but did keep him slightly cleaner. I've clipped all his fur off now as its easier to keep him clean in the mud, so now I've bought him a coat to keep him warm. He would make a lovely lap dog but tries to follow the springer everywhere!
