I have a one year old beagle. Took a while to house train but we did it in the end...lasted about 6 months.

He doesn't pee in the house during the day and he didn't at night. He used to sleep in our room with us until we weaned him off that and he slept on his big bed on the landing outside our door. He was happy with that, didn't whine or scratch the door. We both wake up early with our son/work and as soon as we're up he went out and did his business.

Now he's learned to jump over the baby gate and he will come upstairs with us, but as soon as we go to sleep he jumps over the gate and settled downstairs on our sofa. For the past few weeks we've been coming down to a puddle and a poo. Why is he doing this now? He peed on our sofa last night. One of us even gets up with him about 3 and we still wake up to one or there's one down there at 3 am. I don't really want to cage him overnight because he hates his cage so my other option is putting him in the cellar which I really don't want to do either cause its cold and scary. But I'm running out of options.

If he comes in with us he will sleep on our bed which we both hate and no matter how many treats we give him for staying on the floor, he will jump on when we are asleep.

Suggestions please?

My first thought is the baby gate, I have seen some truly awful injuries/deaths from dogs jumping over and getting hung up on as a matter of urgency you need to find some way to stop this.

Can you shut him in the kitchen? And him sleep in there.

Maybe he is peeing as he cant get back upstairs after jumping the gate to get down ? Dogs tend to poo or wee to state they aren't happy with everything and if he was happy before on the landing maybe he wants to get back there after jumping downstairs ?

He can get over the gate both sides likealaugh :/ he probably finds it easier to go from the bottom to the top. And it's screwed into the wall lonecat. Very narrow staircase so we had to have one made. I think we're going to see if there's anyway to block the top at night. Xx
